July 1, 2010 at 8:35 PMOne of the reasons I really appreciate CPod is that every so often, some of the "things they never told you" pop up in a lesson. For instance, I never heard 腼腆 in all the four years I spent in China (maybe I just somehow missed it), and always used 害羞 to describe a person's character。 So thanks a lot! These little things are very useful.

July 1, 2010 at 8:31 PMI agree with chanelle77. My experience in China was that many people, strangers or friends, would not be shy to describe you (your appearance -> "you gained weight!", or your character), it seems to be part of a conversation more than a judgment.

May 30, 2010 at 12:47 PMI always say 旅游者 for "tourist". Is this correct, or are there other words? I guess 游客 is usually used to greet/address guests in a hotel, plane etc?
Another one: one of my colleages told me that for "translator", the expressions 翻译， or 译者 were commonly used , but not the 翻译者, which I always used (less common, though not wrong).

"我要去美国了" -> "I am going to the USA" (in the near future)
"我要去美国" -> "I want to go to the USA"
I think - but not sure - that when you add a 了 to the 要-sentence, it will usually express something that's going to happen in the near future.
- The 了 is such a tricky little 字。
