thanks, I think Iget it : "连" implies a connexion in the cybernetic sense, ie between machines or between people through the agency of a machine. While "联系" means connection in the sense of people relating to each other. Thus I guess the famous Nokia advert "NOKIA : CONNECTING PEOPLE" would translate into something like "连接人".

The sentence "其中地产股的下跌在意料之中" is translated "Today's real estate losses were predictable".

I don't see any "today" here. Or can "其中" mean "today" (instead of "among" or "among others") ?

  triplelatte   said "It would be great to see "News Segment" become a series. I still lack the vocabulary to effectively comprehend most Mandarin TV news." I second this wish. Dialogues are great e.g. as a preparation to watching movies, but they are not so great if you want to come to terms with the longer  sentences used in news broadcasts.

Once able to understand the news on TV or on Web radio, you can stop "wasting time" listening to the news in English or whatever, and start keeping up to date with current affairs in Chinese only. Then a watershed will have been reached and from then on progress will be on autopilot. At least that's how things worked out for me with the foreign languages I've learned. Of course there's a news series at advanced level but having some slightly dumbed down chunks for us (upper) intermediates would be good.
