Hard to say cos we dont have all these measure words, but I guess I'd be inclined to agree with you on the iron chicken example [on the other hand, if I was talking to a child about it, I think I probably would be inclined to use 一只 because they have a vivid imagination]

..haha, I like this thinking outside the square, particularly when it goes opposite to the general flow. I wonder how many have actually tried it and stuck at it...dying their hair gray when young that is.

...great question. I suspect I have many notions that belong in that basket. Of course it happens in all countries and cultures. A lot of foreigners think we still 天天骑袋鼠。 I'd like to see a list of such cultural relics

yeah, I would be much more surprised if the measure words for animals weren't used. It would seem very strange to me for example to call someone 一位猪...unless you were trying to take a specific tone perhaps [pseudo respective..feigning respect but really derogatory]. It's a bit hard to compare with English here because we don't have much in the way of measure words like Chinese does, but I dont think English would be that different [a pack of mongrels springs to mind]. Even if something is figurative and you know fpr example someone is not literally a pig, you are still calling them a pig nevertheless.

August 24, 2012 at 12:47 PMI tell you what, this Intermediate would have to be one of my all time favourites in terms of vocab...some real purlers in there:
小混混。。 I've definitely come across 混 on it's own before, but I also had a notion that this was the character used for mudbloods when Chinese discuss Harry Potter but a quick squizz at the vocab for that lesson didn't reveal it and 混血 just means hybrid.
坏坏的。。。not evil, just a bit naughty, hehe
有男人味。。。reminds me of manly essense
喏。。。gotta love the sound of that one
魅力。。。is this word more used to describe men? 是的的话，男人是魅力和女人是美丽
乖宝宝。。。哈哈
得了吧。。。enough already
..but possibly my fav is this 眼光。。。such a great image it conjures up...well described by John.
