September 2, 2012 at 10:34 AMwondering about the derivation of 一口闷. I presume 一口 refers to " a mouthful" ...so to take a swig I guess. The 闷 is the bit I'm more interested in here... as opposed to the usual meaning of stuffy when in first tone, I'm guessing it means more to cover tightly [ie the glass with the mouth so as not to spill when you take a big swig [as opposed to a more careful sip] ]...is that the implication here?

September 2, 2012 at 8:05 AMthanks mate. Yeah, I was tempted to make a similar speculation but I wondered if there was more to it, and did wonder if it may have come from one of the dialects. Thought there might be a story to it. I like your thinking, and even if it's on the right track, I'd be interested why they thought this particular dish had that effect over others....maybe something to do with having both sweet and sour....perhaps a double whammy for the senses to set off Pavlov's dog and some accompanying tummy grumbles, hehe. But still, why this dish and not other sweet and sour dishes. Anyhow, no biggie, but I was curious...etymology interests me.
