September 4, 2012 at 11:13 AMWhen I first saw skerr's comment, I was reminded of the debate on whether Cantonese was a dialect or a separate language....except that this might be a debate at the other end...whether these are separate dialects at all with just some natural regional variations in the one language, one dialect and it would come down on how you want to define dialect...these likely at the soft end of the definition. But thanks for the link RJ...on first squizz looks like an interesting article.

I wondered if you meant different accents [ I have been exposed to several American accents and never had a problem...love the accents in fact...haha Jenny did a great job at imitating a New York accent on an old lesson I was listening to the other day] , but your mention of linguists suggests there is more to this. Tell us more. Is this a widely held notion amongst Americans? Can you give some examples?
