August 26, 2014 at 11:18 AMCould I also clarify about the Shanghainese 素了 from the final line being translated as being the Shanghainese equivalent of the Mandarin 算了. In some ways it has a similar vibe, but getting down to specifics, 素了 is being translated as "fine" ...giving in to someone, agreeing, whereas with 算了 I had more the idea that it meant "forget it" ....I guess it could mean forget the argument/forget the haggling, but I would be just as likely to think of it as meaning I'm not interested anymore. Would 算了 really be used in this way in this dialogue? ...it could also be used for walking away from a deal though too, right?

August 26, 2014 at 11:12 AMInteresting that this dialogue is basically newbie level, and yet this Mandarin equivalent word 斩 has only appeared twice on CPod before as far as I can see..once in UI lesson and once in an Advanced lesson [and is not a HSK 1-6 word]. This all leads me to believe that 斩 and its Shanghainese equivalent are directly related [though I don't know which language/dialect got it from which] and that maybe it's a much more common word in Shanghainese than Mandarin. Do I have the right take on this, or am I jumping to the wrong conclusions?
