Thanks for your reply and always good advice.This is one of the great things about CPod.Even much more advanced users are happy to help out newbies and include.I've discovered something else about learning Chinese.While I'm now starting to recognise many of the characters used in newbie lessons,and could type them,I wouldn't be able to handwrite any of them except a few I've specifically practiced.So for me,reading and writing are going to be related but separate skills.What's the deal with stroke order ? Don't get me wrong;I love the idea of there being a correct stroke order,and I love seeing Chinese calligraphy,but why is stroke order so important?

Did you ever see the movie "LA Story" I referred to in a previous post? I wonder how locals view this movie and how accurate they think it is.Long time since I've seen it [1991] but I think they were stereotyping LA folk back then,though don't think they had the dramatic contrast of a Kevin transformation like in the ad you refer to.Perhaps you could direct an attempted equivalent on a camcorder for our edification?

Working my way through the archives,and have noticed that after lesson 6 [intro 6 ] ,it seems to skip to this lesson 24 on colours.What happened to lessons 7 to 23? Were some deleted or something [or are they out of order and hiding somewhere else?]

Would I be correct in assuming that the "huan" in "huanying" is the same as the "huan" in "xihuan" evem though the tones are different ?

Does anyone have a further breakdown of these 2 words?

I'm just a newbie,but in answer to your question,you might want to check out a great lesson titled Aussie Rules,in which the 2nd line of the dialogue is:

你在看什么？

which just has the ni instead of tamen.So I would have thought what you wrote was valid,but best to verify with someone more experienced.Hope that helps

ooops!! Sorry everyone.I made a bit of a mess of that last entry ,and then for some reason couldn't edit or delete it.It should have read:

Thanks for this light entertainment.For some reason it took a long time to download the Youtube clip [?congestion].In the meantime I used google translation tool to translate your characters as I'm just a newbie.I have used this before and the results are always amusing:

While one may get the gist of what is going on ,I think google became "lost in translation".Thus the need for me to get on with learning my characters.

I gather from the clip that the 2nd Kevin is how people in Phillidelphia are viewed/stereotyped?

Whenever I hear an order for coffee like "Skinny triple French Vanilla Half Caf " it always reminds me of a scene from that classic old Steve Martin movie "LA story" [1991 ] and makes me chuckle.I'm not sure about LA locals,but to outsiders he made what sounded at that point in time like a very complex coffee order and made quite a joke of it.However for the last few years  an order such as "Skinny triple French Vanilla Half Caf " is now common place.
