Henning,

yeah ,good point.I had actually read how the grand experiments won't be starting for weeks to months ,but after successfully sending the first particle beam around the LHC the physicists seemed to be having a big shui4yi1ku4 wan3hui4 [is that how'd you'd say pyjama party?? do Chinese even have pyjama parties?] about it already.I wonder how you'd say large Hadron Collider in Mandarin.Presumably Da4 followed by a transliteration for Hadron and then whatever the Mandarin for collider is ?

fansteelydan,

surviving LHC kinda reminds me of surviving Y2K ,though not as much buildup

Thanks Jenny,

Very glad if I can give you one small laugh after the many that you and Ken have given me.Thanks for the fascinating insight into dongxi. This also means I now have the four directions covered.Bei in Beijing in the north, nan in Hainan in the south,xi in xican western food, and dong in dongxi but also thus obviously where shandong [east mountain ] gets its name from. Thanks for the advice re phones in
China also.

Great lesson;so everyday life.Sorry to mention this movie again, but with regards to women in some cases being slower to get ready ,Steve Martin in LA story had a funny scene where he was frustrated by this and described how after his girlfriend looked ready, she had another 1/2 hour of "abstract busyness" which I thought was a good way to put it.

Is the xi in dongxi, the same as the xi in xican? Now if xi refers to western, what does it signify in dongxi? I'd be interested in the derivation of dongxi. As "things" refer to something nonspecific, could the derivation refer to unfamiliar things from the west?

I liked the lesson intro. In some countries, with mobile phones being so widespread, finding a public phone [and one that works] has become difficult. Is this the case for China? Also, any advice on how well global roaming works in China, and the option of buying a sim card in China, etc, would be interesting.

ah,that clears that up.I couldn't find the term "beaner" anywhere in this discussion.I even went back through the youtube ad ,which again loaded very slow [so I went and found it on youtube to download it from there directly ,but it was just as slow, though other youtube clips weren't slow ,so it seems to be a particular problem with that clip].In my ignorance,I had to go on urban dictionary to see what "beaner" even meant ,and that cleared that up.No dlaw, take it from me,xiaohu was definitely referring to the BMW car.

For a full list of countries, you could go to:

I hope this excellent Olmpics minisite remains open even now the games are over. There are no plans for deletion are there?

ps just noticed the comments section is out of chronological order, not that it really matters.

Thanks very much for your helpful link. That's cleared that one up.I have also noticed that in the discussion/comments section of many of the old lessons, original discussions must have been deleted [or were discussions a later addition ?].For example in the intro1 lesson, which was released Sept6 2005,the comments start on July 18,2006.Were old comments deleted when there was an upgrade to the site?

Thankyou Chinese Pod.I have now received my Chinese Pod 2 DVD set with the 888 original lessons. It certainly makes it a lot easier, and the DVD's are so well organised ,being separated into levels and also chronologically. The DVD audio's open in a separate tab in my web browser, and so I still  go  on the website in a separate tab while the audio is playing;works well.Xiexie.
