hehe,yeah,it's a funny name.Their icon makes me think of a little bird going tweet tweet,and I suppose it's meant to be evocative of lots of birds tweeting brief messages.So I would have thought tweeter was more apt.After all a twit is a pregnant goldfish and when they open and close their mouths no sound comes out as far as I can tell.I still haven't made up my mind about it,but it seems a shame if the boards here are quieter because of it.Anyhow,time will tell.

March 7, 2009 at 11:13 AMThat's true mikeinewshot.For me I'd just like to have a look at the literal first before being handed the idiomatic.The ideal is of course to have both.Actually I've just gone back and had a look at what was actually done with the example of 纸老虎 and I would say that CPod has it close to what I think is perfect.In the vocab tab they have given the idiomatic but I would have preferred the literal translation there because this is the first spot I go to after first hearing the dialogue.But if we have a look at the dialogue tab,the rollover actually does have the literal,and then when you click on the show translation for the sentence in question it is then that you get the idiomatic.So in the dialogue tab I would say they have it perfect.I try and understand without any help first,then rollover words I'm not sure of for the literal,see if I can then infer the meaning of the whole sentence and then reveal the translation when I'm ready to see if I had interpreted correctly.

I completely agree.Give me the literal every time and I'll figure it out from there.I certainly knew the expression paper tiger,and even if I didn't I'd be pretty sure I could have figured out what it meant as is it's a pretty straightforward self explanatory expression.Even for less obvious expressions,the fun is in trying to infer what is meant [rather than have it handed out on a silver platter already fully solved] then in discovering what they mean.Then ask for help in interpreting where needed.Sinks in better that way I reckon too.The thing is learning it the literal way one can then see the characters pop up in other words and then recognise them for what they are.And as RJ says,I love when that light goes off and you see the beauty of the Chinese language and it's way of expressing things.I do see the conundrum for Pete though.The moment one starts translating it literally you have the whole other camp out there that will all shout out...what the heck are they trying to say here? You can please some of the people some of the time....

March 7, 2009 at 12:03 AMI noticed in the dialogue how 香肠 xiāngcháng...sausage sounds a little similar to 香港 xiang1gang3...Hong Kong,so it's nice to see the latter turning up in the expansion section for ready comparison.I have noticed this many other times so I'm sure it's more than a coincidence and another example of how CPod puts words in the expansion that could be confused with new vocab for one reason or another.Thankyou;very helpful.

March 6, 2009 at 9:54 PMOh yeah,I love that mnemonic too John.It made me think that the chicken dance had been replaced with the cow dance.I can just imagine going moo,then both hands on knees ,and finally a triumphant exclamation of "hey" with both hands thrown in the air.After a stein or two anything is fun esp with the whole festhaus joinng in,hehe
