tommaz,

Thanks for the link to the interesting article.I liked a couple of lines there:

"It opens up a niche for bottom-feeding companies to terrify hypochondriacs by turning dubious probabilities into Genes of Doom"

and:

"Of course genes can’t pull the levers of our behavior directly. But they affect the wiring...."

I am unable to believe that we are genetic robots whose life is mapped out at the moment of conception, which could then be predicted by some advanced supercomputer.I own my choices.Sure they are influenced by my genetic makeup amongst other factors.

Mango explains that our true nature is fruitarian:

The nature of Monkey Mango was irrepressible fruitarian !! hmm...doesn't have quite the same impact.

I wonder if the Breatharians would consider this guy Mango the Mango Murderer ?

RJ,

I think the general principle of your father-in-laws observation is often right.Studies of body language have shown that friends with a high degree of rapport often end up mirroring each others behaviour. This can be fascinating to watch, particularly amongst teenagers I find.Simple things like crossing their legs at the same time etc. What about twins too? etc.

ps RJ.One of the youtube videos has some good advice though.Mirroring should only go so far;if you're talking to a woman and she goes to the bathroom, don't follow her.

miantiao,

"about a month, like rehab"

hehe;10 points for the originality of connecting flea collars and rehab;I'll pay that one.

You're other comment:

"education....monsters out of latent sociopaths",

..reminds me of Maxwell Smart's oft used line "if only he'd used his....[e.g.cleverness ]..for goodness instead of evil",hehe.

I suppose it depends on what you mean by referring to education, but I agree with pengyu that it is more a question of morals than educational level.Good and bad at all ends of the educational spectrum and in all walks of life I would have thought.

bodawei,

That's right;it's got nothing to do with the upbringing or what they're exposed to,hehe :)

miantiao,

Sure mate, there are many influences.I suppose I've always been more of an internal locus of control person, and as I've implied above,my concern is for those who have an external locus of control to see genes as the all determining factor in behaviour and thus a total cop out.Perhaps life is like a card game. It's not always the hand that your dealt, but how well you play your cards that makes the difference.Of course some people are unlucky though and are dealt a lousy hand.I suppose one just has to make the best of what life deals. But this is just my opinion and I do like the river analogy.I suppose I think there is more to humans than the course of a river. Thanks for the debate though;this topic is always an interesting one,and a pregnancy is often the starting point to considering such matters.Did you ever see that old movie by the way mate? I remember thinking it was pretty good at the time, but of course it may seem quite dated now as that was about 25 years ago.

miantiao,

As much as I liked Gattica, with respect I can't agree with you on this one.I think to have a nature vs nurture argument and paint it as an "either or argument" is way too simplistic.I think we are a complex mixture of not only our genes and our upbringing but also many other factors.I also think there is a danger of suggesting that "your genes have determined that you are going to be a sociopath",as this could then be interpreted as beyond ones control with consequently no responsibility taken for ones behaviour;a ticket to misbehave as it were. Our choices and the way we respond to the various factors are going to have a large bearing on who we become.Even in your example of physical traits, this can be influenced by diet and exercise for example.Behaviour is much more complex than this.hehe, reminds me of the old Eddie Murphy,Dan Aykroyd movie "Trading Places".

ps love your analogy Pete.I suppose given my vinegar tasters avatar,I'd have to say I'm a lemon, lime and bitters.
