March 22, 2009 at 1:50 PMI heard recently about Ken's hexalingual [or should that be sexilingual] abilities, but it didn't mention his ability to be the perfect mimic...sounded exactly like John here.Reminds me of the Hal Roach joke about the ventriloquist who was cracking Irish jokes until finally Paddy [ a huge farmer from Kerry sitting in the audience and becoming increasingly vexed ] had had enough and stood up to his full imposing height and said in a loud annoyed voice " YOU sir,are making out we Irish are all stupid" at which the intimidated Ventriloquist started to say "I'm terribly sorry sir,but...." at which point Paddy interrupted to say " not you,I'm talking to that little fella sitting on your lap" .Sorry Ken :D

March 22, 2009 at 1:18 PMIn the last line from the expansion:
我假期要去打工,赚点儿学费。
...why is 打工 translated as part-time work? A friend previously actually told me that this was the way to say part time work, but it hasn't been used for part-time work in the rest of the lesson,so how can one tell when it refers to part time?

March 22, 2009 at 12:32 PMxuchen,
Who's side are you guys on anyways?...
...definitely 老王's.I'd like to see him get the final laugh.'course he's up against it at the moment. But he'll sober up and soon find out the full story and get his act together.I thought his offer to 吴刚 couldn't have been too tempting given that the latter is being promoted whereas 老王 was offering 你又是搞销售的,although from what you're saying at the end,he is offering him to be at the at the boss and at the top.But is this at the top of sales and still less than his newly promoted position in the old company?。While some have expected 老王 to follow through on his threat to "我要去告你们” I suspect the reverse may end up coming true. He'll take all the companies clients with him to his new business and make a great success of things [I think not only his experience but also his 关系 will count for a lot in the end ] and the dying company will then try and sue him for taking the clients. We might get that court case after all,and 老王 will emerge victorious.Jiayou 老王 !

I know what you mean. For example, even a native English speaker who passed a University course and could pass English exams may not be good at communicating with people and with interpersonal skills. That is a whole other art form not solely dependant on language skills IMHO.However, even in English your communication skills are obviously excellent also,so don't you worry about that. But I think I can glean where you were aiming at though.

Thanks mate. That means a lot to me.I believe in extending the hand of friendship to all people from all nations [even though you know that hand is going to get bitten on occasion, sometimes predictably so],and I feel especially privileged to be a part of this wonderful international community.Of course sometimes "buddy" or "mate" is used more in the sense of an offer of friendship [rather than an assertion of an existing friendship],but in your case I'd be honoured to call you "me mate".Cheers :)

No worries mate. There are videos in the archive but as of a few months ago they are no longer being produced for the time being though I believe it will be in the pipeline again sometime down the track [but probably not in the immediate future].If you go on the lessons tab and then on the channels tab and scroll down you'll see them under video lessons. :)

Sorry mate.Yeah,I should've provided a link with a warning in retrospect,as some people will view these things differently to me who is more struck by the miracle and preciousness of life, than in any squeemishness over our innards. That photo is famous as it was seen as a pretty special moment, though as Snopes pointed out, while it was genuine, the story was drummed up a bit.I'll shout you a meal if ever we meet up mate, hehe.

Thanks for confirming that.Sounds like it's more to do with the nature of the work than the number of hours, but I suppose it all comes down to context. My main understanding of 打 was in the sense of to hit,but I have heard of some of it's other usages [I think some were related to playing musical instruments].But the best fit here seems to be "to fetch"...makes it sound like the work of gofers.I realise this may not be the derivation of the word at all,but it at least it will help to remember another meaning of 打。

你说对了,不过我知道了和我只开玩笑。
