I like the word for secretary..秘书

秘。。secret

书...book

..the person who looks after your secret book,or your secrets and books.I suppose the secret part is there in English too.Your confidant.

I was also wondering about the difference between 要是 [if] and 如果[if] ?

antony73,

Thanks heaps for that mate.I have bookmarked it now, plus I think I can remember it this time as it's cctv.Going on a site entirely in Chinese is still a tad daunting for me.I have used google translate to translate the homepage which covers about half of it.Anyone have any tips on how to use this site? I suppose I'll just have to play around with it.I have also found downloading stuff from Chinese sites to be extremely slow, despite broadband.Anyone else found this?

Actually,I see part of the problem was I was in Firefox and that site seems to prefer IE.

Actually,I know this has been discussed before, but I presume it's going to be difficult to dig out of the archive,so I hope some Poddies can recommend some good sites for watching Chinese TV,kids cartoons, etc,as I agree with Matt, watching programmes in Chinese is really helpful and fun.

Yeah,I thought Lao Wang had one more stint at Intermediate. But as long as he lives on though, the level doesn't matter...

Language is music book sounds interesting.I don't recall the competition though.Where did that pop up?

Most looking forward to the drinking games lesson.Hopefully it will also spark a discussion of many other drinking games.Ganbei.

*Spoiler alert reminder*

我有一个问题关于这个句子:

A:“你悲伤!”

..which is translated as:

.."I was also pretty broken up".

...earlier in the dialogue A is asked whether he has read the books before and he responded that he had only seen the Philosophers Stone movie [and where would he find the time to read the books?].Therefore, how could he be also pretty broken up about something which he has neither read about or seen in the movie?

The way I interpreted it before I saw the translation was something along these lines:

Don't you also be so broken up about it.[In this case the also referring to other fans[not A] also being broken up about it].

对不对??

*spoiler alert*

btw,Once one has seen the latest movie, only 1 of the 2 spoilers in B's second last line are left, and it was the more predictable one.

这是另一非常好的课程

Matt,

"The CPod team is made up of well balanced, intelligent and reasonable people.

CPod was created to make learning fun - we are hardly going to abandon that."

..Oh sure,I couldn't agree more.I didn't mean to imply otherwise. All the podcasts are awesome fun both to listen to and to study and I have every confidence will continue to be.Always fun, often hilarious. My comment was purely directed at community participation and the new policy, and its effect on community spirit.I think I understand your position and where you are coming from.As the biggest transgressor I hear you loud and clear, and apologise to you and the community for any uneasy position I've put you in and the need for a policy.Anyhow,it was just my opinion for what it's worth. All the best mate. :)

Final drivel post before new policy kicks in.On the subject of babies,I thought this 短片 [video]  was good for a 欢笑[belly-laugh]:

matt,

"When looking back over some of the flame wars and long drawn out arguments that do not relate to the lesson topics that they were posted in - I realised that I'd be put off if I were a newcomer wanting some extra help with my studies - and you'll see that some users' only comments have been of that nature."

...I couldn't agree more that the flame wars would be one of the biggest deterrants for lurkers, and that having a greater diversity of Poddies joining in would be awesome.I've always said the more the merrier.I also understand about the focus of the discussions being on lessons and culture. Is straying off topic [what I'm sure we all do at times in conversations when socialising in other contexts] ,so called "drivel", really the root cause of the flame wars? Personally I enjoy reading all the comments on or off topic.I would have thought it was seeing people get personally attacked and the subsequent realisation that by posting one leaves oneself open to personal attack that is the greatest deterrant.

"I'm an Aussie, come-on! We live for fun!"

..就是。I'm with you mate on that. But it is starting to sound a tad like only serious study will be tolerated and I think that runs the risk of CPod losing something special.Anyhow,I will honour your policy decisions and direction.I know this opens me up for all types of abuse, but it's just my liang fen.

好的,我明白。我别胡说了在课程论坛。【ok,I'm clear,no more drivel in the lesson discussions].

So,to be certain, Lao Wang has 2 lessons to go at Intermediate level, but then will continue on at Upper Intermediate for an unspecified/yet to be determined number of lessons there? Well,I must say if that is the case that it's a relief [and thanks for the 别急,别哭..don't fret, reassurance ] on 2 fronts.Firstly that he's not doing any other type of "crossing over" and secondly that he lives on.Great idea putting it into UI for 2 reasons.Firstly it will enable higher level dialogue, and more importantly, for those who've followed the series from the start and thus been on Intermediate for quite some time,it should cajole them into venturing into UI to give it a crack.Jiayou Lao Wang.I know he must prevail in the end.

Oh yeah,new series title:

老王方法。 [Lao Wang's way]...after all ,he is going to inspire us all with his way out of all the mess, perhaps even solving the global economic crisis on the way.I wouldn't put anything beyond him.Watch this space.
