December 28, 2010 at 11:59 PMyeah, well explained mate. A coincidence that this thread is concurrent with the "do you get left out of conversations thread" because in addition to the "when you are supposed to be relaxing" bit a common element of the complaint about "talking shop" is when you have a social gathering and a subgroup of that gathering are from the same industry, perhaps even the same workplace, and thus are making references, perhaps even using jargon, that those at the gathering not from that line of work are unable to follow and thus feel left out [well at least that's how some feel...personally I'm interested in what others do even if I'm not up to speed on their industry..makes it all the more interesting].
Posted on: Sign Language in China
December 28, 2010 at 11:43 PMI read something interesting about sign languages around the world the other day. Further to the discussion of dialects and topolects, I read they can also have accents. When say an Australian who is used to using Auslan learns for example a Chinese sign language, the Chinese signers will detect an accent in the Aussie. How so? It will be subtle stuff like making the same sign but with the fingers a little more relaxed in the sign than the Chinese signers for example. It will definitely be noticed though.

December 28, 2010 at 11:34 PMthanks connie for confirming. When I went back and had a proper listen I realised it could be none other than his sister. 或者至少B爸爸【没有兄弟】是A爷爷的儿子。。。。还有可能B也在工作和给A朋友的价格【在澳洲说“mates rates"] ....or, to say the least B's father [who has no brothers] is A's grandfathers son ....and also maybe she was at her work and giving her brother mates rates.

December 24, 2010 at 5:56 AMthat had occurred to me and I guess that's probably it. I got more the knowledgeable sales girl vibe, but then again I guess some shopaholics are more knowledgeable than the sales staff.

December 24, 2010 at 4:15 AMOnly had a quick listen to the dialogue but how did the shop assistant know so well what laoba went for? I guess he could be a regular customer or I could have the wrong take on this altogether. I guess it's not important, but just curious.

December 24, 2010 at 4:14 AMthanks bodawei...really interesting. The Chinese seem to love their homophones...it seems to me the majority of such beliefs revolve around homophones..or near homophones.

December 22, 2010 at 9:24 AMhehe, clever. I have heard of some folk naming their cars. Seems I've heard it more for old bombs too...the more bomby the more such a term of endearment

December 29, 2010 at 10:47 PMlexx,
the "c" in "cAN" shows that you can type in lower case and as it's at the start of a sentence it makes me think you have "Caps Lock" on and pressed "Shift" to get that lower case "c". If Caps Lock is on it should be indicated by a light on your keyboard and you can get out of it by pressing the Caps Lock key again. Good luck.
