December 31, 2010 at 12:15 AM"Us, that big amorphous group that we belong to, but claim we don't. :) "
呵呵,"Us"。。你的意思是不是“美国”?。。。或者“我们”
...Wa! That's a first for me I think! I just found it easier to be explicit/ succinct in a clarification question in Chinese than English.很有用....have others made a similar discovery before?....if so has it become a common method for you to use?
oops...after posting just realised this is an Ellie lesson. That Chinese above should read:
hehe, "Us" ...do you mean "America" or "us"......as you see it's the "us" bit where Chinese made it easier to be clear in a succinct fashion.
next bit of chinese was "very useful"

December 30, 2010 at 11:58 PMI can only agree with your first paragraph. A struggling native speaker also deserves patience surely. They may not have had the same educational opportunities as others, may not have been blessed with intelligence, or may have faced goodness knows what other challenges in their life. I'd rather view mangling as a challenge to decode. Bit like learning another language..could be fun even.

December 30, 2010 at 9:32 PM"you might find this question a bit absurd"
..yeah, absolutely...but not because a proud nationalistic Chinese taxi driver might want to compare his/her country to the US but just because it's so general. But I guess it opens up the opportunity to break down a comparison into categories and you could start wherever you liked. I'm no fan of prescriptive diplomatic answers. It makes conversations meaningless and would be a missed opportunity to explore something potentially interesting, not to mention close off an opportunity to get in some good language practice. I'd rather hear what people really thought. A shame when folk are so sensitive that you have to shut off real communication.
