I've heard this before but I'm still a little surprised this meet the parents thing only comes when marriage is inevitable. Aren't the parents interested in who their kids are dating prior to that? Furthermore, if the parents don't like the answers they get from the prospective hb, 怎么办？..and if they have the power of veto, should it have gotten to that stage?

Interesting. My understanding of American culture would largely come from film and tv. I have seen many of these public proposals, but I always assumed they were just movie stunts for dramatic effect, entertainment value and that in real life it was more the exception than the rule.
