..definitely not as there is also the Chinese accent in there, which for me is fascinating..that you can hear two accents.

oh, so they're the illegal Filipino Satellite dishes that you've been talking about and you're shaking a deal on them with the local agent [ very brave to post the evidence publically like that]. Why do you need 2 though? I guess one points North and one points South, right?

..definitely not every word, but I went on to listen to the whole podcast and there were several points where I thought classic Kiwi. I would say pretty much every sentence had at least one word that had a distinctive Kiwi accent..sometimes it was a few words in a sentence and at other times she may have gone a whole sentence without much trace.

..to my ear definitely Kiwi and definitely not Australian.

"Can you explain what exactly makes it Kiwi?"

I'm no linguist as you know so I'm not going to be good at describing it [ this would be much easier in person where I could imitate [and perhaps exaggerate a little for the sake of clarity/illustration] what I was hearing and then contrast it with how an Aussie would say it, or just with how I would naturally say it without hamming up a broad Aussie accent. I could give you muliple examples from the podcast if you really want, but did you listen to my two examples above for instance with the times I gave? Listen to those 2 words and tell me what you think.

"Also, if we weren't given the pointer (she lived in Auckland for 10 years) do you think you would still describe it as 'clearly' Kiwi?"

I can quite confidently say I would have said it was Kiwi, though I agree it's not a strong Kiwi accent, so I'm not sure how far in to the convo I would have gotten before I twigged. If I didn't get it at 2:02 I probably would have got it by 2:23 as these were just 2 stronger examples but there were other less strong hints in there up to that point.

oh yeah, of course. I was thinking in English and the tai made me think of an altered spelling of "Thai". How daft of me [it's pretty late/early here and I'm sleep typing。。梦游，梦打字....I hope that excuse will suffice, hehe] . I haven't listened to this lesson either, so I'm not sure if something was said about it in the podcast. Thanks mate. :)

wa, this was so so much easier to follow than the taxi driver interview because of the 标准 accent..very enjoyable to listen to. Great interview. I am thinking though that as tough as it is, we really need to hear more interviews with nonstandard accents from all around China [if we are to be equipped to handle comprehending non standard accents in China] and I think BST is the perfect place for it. We'd need a fair bit of support though in both tips on how to understand it [how it varies from standard] as well decoding it.

hang on mate. Listening a bit further it's quite clearly a Kiwi accent. 2:23 "years" is really clear for example. I think you've been away too long, hehe ;)

ok, just started listening to this one, and I've just hit the 2:02 mark where I think already there is a hint [granted it's not strong] of a Kiwi accent..when she says "me" [and a slight hint prior to this].
