Hi Jenny,

Thanks for the giving me the vibe of 划船...sounds just lovely, and something I'll be on the lookout for now when I make it to China one day. In English at least, I don't think that the distinction between rowing and paddling comes down to the amount of energy applied [ though I agree that rowing is often part of a competitive sport and many forms of paddling are leisurely] but rather in paddling the paddle is free as in the lesson pic and not connected to the craft whereas in rowing the oar is attached to the boat at the oarlock at which point it pivots around. So the whole action is different.

btw, I wouldn't call either the lesson pic or the description in the lesson "rowing". Is Chinese a bit more vague on this?

I think you meant xiǎngniàn, right?

I would say they both mean "to miss [somebody]" but xiǎng can have several other meanings [eg to want] and so is more contextual, whereas xiǎngniàn is clearer in its meaning without context. Just my take on it mate for what it's worth.
