In this case it means "will". ...so tonight she'll come and we'll practice together. 回来 would mean return [firstly I think this might be the first time she's ever come over to his place, and secondly, I could be wrong here but even if it wasn't her first time, if she doesn't live there I'm not sure how natural it would be to use 回来 but would be interested in comment on that]

..definitely can see what you mean. You could say they're mentally strong, show grit, determination, resolute, mentally tough.

水流很大
translated as "heavy flooding"
I thought 水流很大 means the current is very strong, which for mine doesn't necessarily indicate that it's flooding [sure, during floods the current will be strong, but flooding also means the river has broken it's banks].
I learnt 洪水 in the recent floods here. I tend to think of flooding in terms of the effect the water has where it goes after it's broken the banks, and strong currents in terms of the the wisdom of crossing such a current, whether it be by swimming across [and potentially showing up on the news that night naked and clinging to a tree] or driving your car across a flooded road and the likelihood of appearing on the news that night on the roof of your car.

July 2, 2011 at 2:30 PMThis 烈 is an interesting character because even though it's only 火 as the radical and 列 is just phonetic, all 3 components are pretty intense...fire, knife and 歹 wicked.
So I guess a mnemonic for remembering the components of this character for describing strong alcohol might be that when you drink something strong, it burns [fire] your throat [or you're breathing fire] which might cause you to exclaim "Wicked!" and might cause some others to get drunk and become violent [knife]. In terms of placement of the components...fire down in your belly and knife in your right hand [sorry 左撇子】

July 1, 2011 at 11:57 PMSorry, I was going to add that my limited understanding would suggest that this de is not a particle indicating tense per se, but it just was the only thing in that sentence that could give that sense. 得 is used after a verb to then go on with what follows to say how that verb is or was done. My guess is it may depend on context as to whether that verb was done in the past, or whether it is just describing how someone generally does something.
