June 11, 2014 at 10:36 PMI would have thought 20+% of the Chinese population tuning in wasn't anything to be sneezed at. I'm wondering what percentage of rural poor have tellies.
Interestingly Australia topped the list of per capita game attendances in a season for selected individual big league sports at 30.1%, and in USA basketball, american football and ice hockey all well below 10%. I'm wondering though if this is at least partially explained by less availability of seats ...much larger population vs limited number of seats. And great tv coverage means attendances at matches aren't necessarily a reliable reflection of how popular the sport is.

June 5, 2014 at 4:10 AMhey, I just noticed my original reply said it was made from android which is definitely not the case. I don't even own an android. I own an iphone but virtually never use that for board comments and definitely made the above comment from windows desktop. No biggie, but just saying...

July 4, 2014 at 10:33 AMhaha, yeah, classic. The American Bill Bryson was also quite amusing in his observations on cricket in his book Down Under.
" No, the mystery of cricket is not that Australians play it well, but that they play it at all. It has always seemed to me a game much too restrained for the rough-and-tumble Australian temperament. Australians much prefer games in which brawny men in scanty clothing bloody each other’s noses. I am quit certain that if the rest of the world vanished overnight and the development of cricket was left in Australian hands, within a generation the players would be wearing shorts and using the bats to hit each other.
And the thing is, it would be a much better game for it."
Naturally I enjoyed this bit too:
"The upshot was that Australia was giving England a good thumping, but then Australia pretty generally does"
Yes, we've gotta have a lesson on cricket now. I can hear the cheers.
