fair enough. I get your point. It's like the old "are you fluent? " question. I think these things are very hard to define. I think it also depends on ones aspirations, standards one sets oneself, and those goalposts can change. Wow, I'm impressed you've been writing English subtitles for Chinese films. Did you just do it yourself, or did you make some money from that? I'd love to hear more about which ones and how you found it, and anything else you care to share about it. You're Chinese is obv miles ahead of mine, but I have found just transcribing 15 minute lessons enormously beneficial so my next goal was to translate a chinese film for my own benefit, but I've got distracted into other things and so have put that on the backburner for the time being. Its great having folk like you at your level on the boards here. I hope we see more of you. :)

haha,

"Another example of people overestimating there vocabulary sizes and chatting it large on the net!"

...I doubt it. Firstly he did preface it with "If linguistists’ estimate of 10,000 words for a basic vocabulary is correct". I don't know where linguists get these figures from or what his source was for that, but I think these things are hard to estimate when you get into the big numbers, unless you are really obsessive and do count the words as you go. There can also be a discrepancy between characters and words.

Also, when I sat the hsk, one section was repeating long sentences in Chinese. I remember thinking it was more of a memory exercise for me than it was a Chinese test because I knew all the words, but trying to repeat long sentences on the spot was a bit of a challenge and that I may have had the same trouble in English. So exam performance can come into it, and as you allude to, there's more to it than just knowing the words. But I don't think John is one to talk it up as he doesn't need to. Strikes me as more matter of fact.

哈哈,对啊,我真糊涂了

If you click on the new lesson avatar it takes you to the old 2006 one Ken and Jenny did, but I just found that if you directly click on the download links on your home page to the right of the avatar, you can get all the current ones. The lesson Audio has David and Shannel discussing the topic afresh.

No worries mate.

This is a rippa of a question. I took note of David's correction. I reckon I would have written it just as you as well, wanting to express " it's only" with 只是 [which sort of has a value judgement in it; merely]. But seeing David's correction I suddenly recalled how oft I have heard that sort of thing expressed just like that [it's cropped up in Cpod dialogues before and I can hear it but I just can't quite recall which lessons], obviously the natural chinese way to express it. I think 就是 is just emphasing a mossie is a mossie [with the implied implication of exactly that and nothing more, so what do you expect? ]. So I think it's one of those subtle usage things, and one of those things that just pushes one's chinese towards the more natural. But yeah, I'm interested as well to hear what David has to say. Great question.
