pretz, I had exactly the same experience when I first started to brush up on my French. I'm pretty much over that now though. I think it's just that the Chinese is closer to the forefront and French was buried deeper. But once you revive the French, you can switch between the two I think. I still rarely get it if I don't know how to say something in French..then Chinese want's to jump in [note..not English..because your brain is in foreign mode, hehe, though of course sometimes Chinese or French wants to jump out when you want to speak English, as with Chris above]

haha, you've gotta love that. Yeah, I've had that sort of thing before. Yeah, 以为 is a perfect translation in this context I agree.

yeah, for me I suspect a lot of it is the latter. After studying Chinese, French seems easy peasy...there are just no gimme's in Chinese like there are in French. I think it's all relative. Also, developing an interest in language helps as you say.

ps gimme's from English [knowledge of English that is...of course the direction of travel has often been from French, or Latin etc to English] that is. Of course, once you know some characters, if you see them in new combinations to make words you can have a pretty good idea what it's going to be. But that's building Chinese on Chinese, not getting free from the mother tongue.

Hey pretz, didn't know you did high school French also. Yeah, that's cool when you still remember it from then [I've brushed mine up lately though, so I now longer exactly have that harking back feeling...still, it's kinda nostalgic, hehe]

Still think you may well be right. I guess 张 and 将 are other possibilities then, but I don't think they fit as well.

15:18 I think you're probably right again. 这样子 ...I didn't originally think the zi was attached to the zheyang, but I think it may have sounded slightly separate from it because Jenny started laughing. I knew of course what she meant anyhow even though I wasn't clear on that character..the rest was very clear to hear. But interestingly if ever there was any doubt as to meaning, this is probably the best example from the whole video of where the video has helped the learner with Jenny's touching herself and laughing making the meaning entirely clear.
