Asian parents are really unbelievable. My parents even used to "debate" in front of us how and when they were going to introduce Jonathan to us ("You know, Jonathan really wants to meet you, he's a sweet kid!". Yikes!

This is so Asian! My parents, who were young (19 and 20 yrs old when they had me), highly educated, and very modern, used to tell my younger brother and I that we had an illegitimate younger brother -- "Jonathan" -- by my father's mistress "Gkong Dtai Waa" (in Cantonese, "Tell Big Fib"). They were so good that my brother and I didn't know which way was up for many years. My Dad would start out by saying that we were "laap-sup tong jjup" ("fished out of garbage bin"), and our mother would then say, "Don't be silly, and don't tease the kids like this... you KNOW that they were made by their Mummy and Daddy, just like Jonathan, your half-brother by Gkong Tai Waa..." Yeah... but I can smile about it today.

Yes, it's the same here for me. The lessons ends abruptly at 6+ seconds. I'm sure CPOD will sort this out soon... Thanks, Sharon

Yes, I'm having a problem downloading the MP3 too. When I clicked the exclamation mark, the message was that the URL was not found on the server. Help!

Was just wondering -- In terms of politeness, is there any difference between this "qing3gei3wo3"+[noun] construction and the "qing3lai2"+[noun] construction (which is used sometimes here in SE Asia, but I don't know if it's even proper Chinese)? Jenny, Ken, thanks for yet another great lesson... Thanks!

Hello. Is another word for "to be executed" is "bei4chu3jue2"? How do you say the same thing using the word "si3xing2", the verb wouldn't be "bei4", would it? And for what it's worth, a flowery (to me) word used in swordfighting flicks for "beheaded" is "zhan3shou3". Thanks again, Jenny and John for a brilliant lesson! It really is a "worthy buffet"! Best, Auntie

Sorry, apologies for the word "poorer". That word wasn't meaning at all, because (i) China is NOT a poor country; and (ii) the kind of plumbing I described just seems to be a hallmark of SE-Asian construction styles, you could even find this in a swanky new condo in a swish city like KL or Bangkok. All the best for the week ahead -- Auntie

Brilliant lesson! Thanks CPOD. Just a word of friendly Auntie Advice (unsolicited) for Laowai users: Please remember to be gentle with that plunger! In many poorer countries in SE Asia, the pipes below the "U" bend can be very frail -- you have no idea how all connects up under the floor! --, and a strong, strapping laowai with an above-average plunger technique could end up cracking or dislodging flimsy plastic pipes further along the way! Oh well, perhaps China is different... Cheers, Auntie
