May 28, 2008 at 6:11 PMEditing isn't working for me... I meant to just say for the second translation: "You can compile the vocabulary you would like to study"

May 28, 2008 at 5:55 PMI hope it's not too late to ask a question about this dialog...
The phrase: 你可以把想学的词收集起来, is translated in the PDF as: "You can compile the vocabulary you have studied", but I think it should be: "You can compile the vocabulary you would like to study and review it." Which one is correct?

May 26, 2008 at 1:10 PMmaxiewawa, Unlike English, I was under the impression that there is some official standard of what constitutes standard Mandarin. When John said that Jenny's accent is not perfect, it's just with respect to some artificial standard.

May 26, 2008 at 4:09 AMI find this series of lessons extremely helpful. I think this is the hardest part of understanding Chinese in real life. I noticed that the Chinese words for vegetables have great regional variation, and the different names are not mutually understood between regions. For example, 油菜 vs. 上海青菜.

May 20, 2008 at 1:44 PMOne more thing: I love these specialty cuisine lessons and I really hope that at some point this hungry traveler visits a temple to eat some 斋菜!

May 20, 2008 at 3:22 AMCan someone explain what that was in the beginning? Was that supposed to be a Xinjiang accent? There's a visiting professor here who is originally from Xinjiang, but she doesn't talk like that at all. In fact, her accent is really standard sounding to me (compared to all of the Jiangsu/Shanghai people here)... Is it because she is Han, and the person in this dialog was supposed to be Uyghur?

May 18, 2008 at 4:44 PMI have more questions about the dialog itself, in addition to the one above about 一般都是: I don't understand how: "对我们文科生来说,要考就考北大复旦。" corresponds to: "According to our Liberal Arts department, I should try to get into Beijing University or Fudan". To me it sounds more like: "To us liberal arts students, the only schools worth applying to are Beijing or Fudan" Have I totally misunderstood this sentence? Can someone please explain this sentence? I've only heard 的话 be used to express the idea of 'if', but here it seems to mean regarding / to speak of. Could I have instead used 关于? If not, when do I use 的话 and when do I use 关于? Thanks in advance!
