Has your coworker installed Portuguese support and enabled the Brazil locale?  When I was in Portugal, I recall seeing those characters on the keyboard, has he chosen the proper keyboard layout, or is he using some generic layout?

I'm running the Mainland China locale in Ubuntu and typing characters works great, all of the programs are in Chinese.  It's really easy to install as well.

I was definitely the  "Can't sleep must compile kernel" guy back in college, circa 2004.   But Ubuntu in particular has come a long way since then, we hardly have to deal with any of those issues anymore.  These days, if you want to try Ubuntu, you can install it within Windows, and if it doesn't work just uninstall it.  Or you can make sure that all of the auto-detection works with the Installation CD before actually installing it.

我老婆叫青。

Hi JP - I always enjoy hearing you on Dear Amber, so I'm glad to see that you're the replacement for Clay. I was curious, if you don't mind, how long have you been learning Chinese?

In my opinion, I think that two of the main reasons for the obesity disparity are:

As user33162 pointed out, dairy.  In my opinion, the existence of dairy in Western cuisine and diet is one of its biggest problems, and the relative lack of it in Chinese cuisine and diet is one of its biggest advantages.

The prevalence of vegetables in the Chinese diet and cuisine.  Whenever I go to the local Chinese supermarket, I'm always in awe in the checkout aisle seeing all of the people there with shopping carts loaded with fresh vegetables.  The people not buying all of the fresh vegetables tend to be the heavier ones.

Whenever I've been to a Malaysian/Singaporean restaurant there's always a dish called "Hainanese chicken rice".  Is this the same thing as authentic Hainanese chicken?

The discussion at 7 minutes through reminds me of the expansion sentence from the Wang's office lesson:

男人负责赚钱,人负责花钱

My mother-in-law in LV and her friends all wear those visors.  The visors are so funny looking!

Hi Jenny,  In my experience, a word like "pescetarian" isn't a whole lot of fun in English either...  Using a word like that to specify the degree of vegetarianism is just asking for it.    - Andrew / 阿度

我不吃肉,也不吃鱼。我吃素。

wo3 bu4 chi1 rou4, ye3 bu4 chi1 yu2。 wo3 chi1 su4。

I don't eat meat or fish. I'm vegetarian.
