January 25, 2014 at 6:57 AMI thought I requested a Qing Wen on the more difficult 然 words, but I have no documentation for it. In any case, you left out some of the most confusing words. Perhaps you could do another episode on other 然 words.
既然 然而 依然 仍然 偶然 惶然 了然
嫣然 悚然 惘然 果然 必然 幡然 固然
And there are more; these are just some I have struggled with. Some are difficult to keep straight. In general, what is 然 doing in all of these? Are there general principles about what 然 means when we find it in a word? There are also a lot of phrases with 然, many of which I find confusing.
This episode dealt with 竟然 and 居然. I have come across the latter more frequently. In this podcast they were described as being the same. Is there any difference at all between them in terms of subtlety of meaning, context in which it's usually found, grammatically?
