July 25, 2015 at 8:02 PMThanks, I'll use the "generation" rule of thumb for the 阿姨 label. That seems fairly clear. It also rules out most people, though. I feel like I would be insulted if anyone over about 7 addressed me as 阿姨.

July 24, 2015 at 9:22 PMI have been told a lot by Chinese people (from the mainland) in recent years that no one asks about if you've eaten anymore. Is this regional?
I was also told to say 怎么样 instead of 你好, but never heard anyone else saying it.
I tend to get flustered when greeting people and I'm not sure I'd be quick enough to come up with something to suit both the person and the time of day before the appropriate moment was past. I have trouble remembering people's names quickly even in English, let alone Chinese, so "name+好" would be difficult to mentally process in time for a greeting. 早, though. I think I could handle 早.
For things like 阿姨好, what is the appropriate age range for addressing someone this way? I'm always worried that I'll be insulting them by inadvertently telling them they look old.

I once had a Chinese tutor spend our entire lesson on telling me the standard forms for verbally identifying characters (as I'd had a lot of frustrating telephone experiences). Unfortunately, she was only able to remember a few off the top of her head, such as 牛马的马 and 鸟笼的笼. Are there online resources for where to find lists of these?

Does it mean, "It's important to him that this matter be dealt with in a timely manner"? And if not, what is 这件事 referring to here?
