There are a few schools of thought within mainland China with regards to simplification 簡化字。Traditional, or regular script, still has its supporters as does Romanisation based upon pinyin.
Interestingly the KMT also debated adopting simplified versions during the 1930s.
Most arguments supporting simplification are based upon ease of learning. However, arguments based upon economic advancement have existed since Lu Xun's time.
