32 Transcripts

Well, one of my students came through with 32 Intermediate transcripts. At my request (to save time), he didn't bother with Pinyin, or any of the English spoken by John or Jenny. So I have left the file in Word form so people can edit it as they wish.

Download here.

Thanks to Richy for the time spent on those.

I had to restrain myself from laughing when another student came up to me and apologised for not doing any transcripts because "My little brother destroyed your CD". I have never actually heard someone try to use this excuse before. At least his dog didn't eat it.

RJ,

I guess you are playing my game now. But to answer your deleted question - yes, I am well. I learned a few weeks ago that I have received a transfer to a new school starting next year. Somehow, that has taken my focus off learning Mandarin for the time being - I guess I am thinking more about using the opportunity to get a fresh start - 15 years in one school leaves you a bit stale. But when I get back to Mandarin, I will be focusing more on the 'Chinese Learning Platform' website.

baba,

The spam certainly came from someone in or connected to CPod - that is beyond question.

Furthermore, I'm convinced that it was done by an American male (sounds overly specific, I know).

As to which American male, that is guesswork, but as John B was doing all the work in getting me to vanish, I think he is the best bet. Especially considering his computing background. And if I got the wrong one, who cares - one in, all in.

The only other American I've exchanged emails with in the last year is RJ, and I know its not him.

What really annoys me about your message, is that you acknowledge that Tal's accusation is most unlikely, yet you preach only to me. After all, the message is the same to both of us, isn't it - don't make unsubstantiated accusations/assumptions. Do you really think adding 'maybe' lessens the accusation? Is that how one gets off being hit with slander - 'Hey mate, I've heard that maybe you killed a man last week'.

go_manly,

What I'm about to say, I say with the best of intention, and wish no-one any illwill. Reading this thread, 2 things strike me as improbable. Firstly I think it is very unlikely that you have been involved in the theft of personal information from anyone's computer [ though this is just from the viewpoint of an outsider who is not in possession of the facts, and I guess also knowing you on the boards this is not something I would see you doing]. Having said that, I think tal only used the word "maybe", which to me is not an accusation but more of a suspicious probe. I guess if you're going to deliberately pass on spam then it is only natural that would arouse such a suspicion....that it contained spyware. Also, despite the animosity between you and tal, I really can't see him passing on spam. Secondly, johnb works for CPod. Really, who is going to believe a professional working for CPod would engage in such unprofessional behaviour? That is extremely implausible. I think it is very unfortunate if you've been sent spam mate, I know that is annoying etc, but do you see the position you put yourself in when you make wild stabs at where it has come from and then engage in sending it yourself? I hope that we can all let sleeping dogs lie and just move on. I wish you well both in your new job [ they say a change is as good as a holiday] and in your Chinese studies. Take care, baba :)

btw that link to your 32 transcripts is working, so you're a good sport still sharing them

Firstly, all that spam was sent to ME first, within a day of being 'disconnected' from CPod. I didn't know who was responsible, so I 'redistributed' it to the most likely suspects. My number one suspect was (and still is) John B, but what the hell, you deserved it as well.

Regarding your 2nd accusation, WTF. How the hell would I do that??? Clearly you ARE playing a game, despite your assurances, in making such a ridiculous accusation. But I'm glad you have made such a libelous accusation in writing. I will now consider my options, so perhaps you should ask CPod to remove your provokation.

The only personal information I have on you is your name. And if my knowing your name is the only reason you think I must have accessed your computer, maybe you should think about what personal details you have attached to your email profile. I know your name only because you sent me emails. Please tell me that there is more to your suspicion than me knowing your name.

Oh so Bob wants to share his toys again now, that's nice. Maybe he's making some progress after all. I wonder if this means he'll be giving up on BS like arranging for all manner of email spam to be sent to a person who he irrationally has some kind of issue with? Maybe even being involved in the theft of personal information from that person's computer? Something tells me he'll keep on playing his "game" however. But I won't.

yes it is, but I guess because shareef seems like a misspelling it kind of highlights the "ee" sound which somehow seems apt under the circumstances and helps drag it out in the song. Maybe it should be shareeeeef [..I don't think this would work if it was shariiiiif ...maybe it would, but not for me, hehe] don't like it [though that's an exaggeration....it might be that after a few drinks though, hehe]

..hmm, funny you should use the word "foxed"....but I'm glad you did use that and not that it's been hounding you. It means we could possibly team up. 我变成到一个吸血鬼在“吸血鬼日记” 【在这里: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Vampire_Diaries】。 在那个美国的电视系列,我是达蒙,所以我会迫使你【呵呵以前三藏法师是一点儿一样的,对吧?】

He engaged in a spot of anti-social behavior on the boards, made no attempt to apologize, and took it all rather badly. I'd like to say he'll be missed, but then really I think he'll always be with us in spirit. Sometimes more than spirit. And a fetching veil.

I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back on A Business Dinner With a Supplier. The audio player on this lesson is in bad shape--I suppose I should have used some other audio player (therefore, the time codes didn't mean very much to help me find these points).

5) (3:32)
对呀,说久仰大名。好那接下来呢,别人就可能(?)回答你,... (the jiù sounds more like ju jiang / there seems to be another syllable where the ? is)
对呀,说‘久仰大名'。好,那接下来呢,别人就可能回答你......

6) (6:09)

sorry I couldn't find this point, as the time code doesn't help me and there wasn't much else by way of a marker in the context.

7) (7:22)
就是说你(?)掌握的东西不够你使用。(There seems to be another syllable where the question mark is)

8) (8:25)

The “所” is optional, so you can also say “大家提的意见”. I feel “大家所提” is more "rhythmical" or “顺口”, and slightly more formal.

I think this Comprehensive Chinese-English Dictionary definition given on the nciku page for 所 would apply in this case:

3. 助词 [Literary] [直译: (used before a verb to form a noun construction) what, that which, those whom, etc.] noun or pronoun+所+verb ⓐ (used with 的 to modify a noun)

我所认识的人 the people I know

大家所提的意见 the opinions various people put forward

Privately I'm quite comfortable, when translating into English in my mind, with replacing this 所 with an "all".

Hi zhenlijiang

Just wondering about your suggestion for #7. What would 所 mean here? As a standalone character, the only meaning I have come across in lessons is as a measure word, and the other meanings I can find on Nciku don't help me to understand it here.

Yes, they are in alphabetical order, but that is only because I combined Ricky's separate Word files in that order - naturally the file names appeared in alphabetical order on the CD he gave me. I gave him a CD with about 100 podcasts - apparently he chose the shortest ones to do first, why is why Ken appears in many of these lessons.

I've been looking through the first transcription "A Business Dinner with a Supplier".

It seems my transcriber made some errors. I've corrected some myself, but could someone help me out with the following:

1. (0:50) 招待其实就是请客的意思。(sounds like 2 syllables, not 4)

2. (0:59) 当然,吃喝招待在中国是非常重要的,生意,对吧? (Sounds to me like the comma should be one character later, and is 喝 right?)

3. (3:09) 然后你非常的尊重他,所以他的名字是很厉害的,大名。(sounds to me more like suǒyǐ shuō nǐ)

4. (3:29) 但是咱们中国人...  (sounds like dāng to me)

5. (3:32) 对呀,说久仰大名。好那接下来呢,别人就可能(?)回答你,...  (the jiù sounds more like ju jiang / there seems to be another syllable where the ? is)

6. (6:09) 对。就是说你要做很多...  (Is it correct?)

7. (7:22) 就是说你(?)掌握的东西不够你使用。(There seems to be another syllable where the question mark is)

I'm finding the time code showing when I play back this dialogue to be a bit screwy, making it hard to find the points you've brought up.
The first four questions I've gone over though:

1) Jenny says this really quickly, she is saying 其实就是.

2) You're right, it should be 那当然吃,(not 喝)招待在中国是……

3) Right again. That should be 然后你非常的尊重他,所以说你(的)名字是很厉害的,大名。

4) This is 但是咱们中国人……

Just a suggestion Bob--it would be helpful if you posted the link to the lesson with the questions. Sorry if this sounds like grumbling, but it's just that much more trouble, to go search and find the lesson being talked about.

And can you tell us which 32 lessons have been covered here? It's not that I want a list really. And why don't I just go and look through to find out? Well I started to (and I have a feeling that's why Phil's list only goes down to the first 10), but scrolling through such a big document to find all the titles was terribly straining on the eyes, I abandoned that attempt pretty quickly.

Well, as I said, I've left in as a Word document for people to edit, so feel free to create your own lesson list. The only editing I've had time to do is to put all the transcripts into one document, and to change the font of the characters. (I'd be interested to know what font you are seeing, because it is unlikely you have mine installed). I will be going through the lessons one at a time as I get the time, adding Pinyin and a Vocab list - but don't let me stop anyone who wants to do that first!

I'm impressed that you dragged them away from computer games and into a socially worthwhile pursuit.  :-)  And 'good work' to Ricky.

I've just finished my first semester teaching Chinese students in China.  In two courses (and four classes) there was only one 'late' assignment (illness was the reason). Nothing along the lines of the dog ate my homework.  I was puzzled by this absolute compliance.

Lots of excuses for missing class - because an excuse constitutes 'leave' and cannot be used against them in their final mark.  Mostly the excuses were 'I have a family matter', ganmao and laduzi.  A couple of students took leave to look after sick/dying relatives.
