Automatic Sign In

September 23, 2010 at 12:40 AM posted in General DiscussionUp until about a week ago, every time I came to CPod, I was automatically signed in under my ID. But now this is no longer the case - I have to manually sign in every time, and further, my password is never remembered. Is there a reason for the change?

I don't really follow this discussion and I wonder if someone could explain what SHOULD happen.
In the distant past my laptop would retain my email address and my password so I always got in quickly.
Since Dashboard (I believe that is about when the world changed) I have a situation where my laptop will never remember my email address, even though it does in other applications, but it does remember my password.
This continues to be the case up until a few minutes ago.
I do not have an intermittent problem - it consistently works this way, or has done since about Jan/Feb 2010.
Ideally I would like it back the way it was originally, but it seems that the experience on this point varies from poddie to poddie.
I suppose my question is, why does the ChinesePod site never remember my email address when other applications remember it? (Please no tech talk.)

Hi All -
I can now confirm that the problem with automatic sign-in has been fixed and shouldn't be causing any more issues.
If you are still experiencing this problem, please let us know by contacting us directly (click "contact us" in the footer of any page of the website).
Thanks.

Godfrey_Bigot,
I can confirm that the problem with the sign-in has been identified, and am told that it should be fixed tomorrow. I'll be sure to keep you updated.

I've found that sometimes it doesn't show up for me, either. I'm not sure that there's any rhyme or reason to it, other than perhaps some browser rendering/error message quirks.

Godfrey-Bigot, good point. I've just gone back and double checked on both my work laptop (which I generally use) and my personal laptop (which I'm using tonight). It's still there on my work laptop, but I don't see it on my personal laptop. I'm in China and without a VPN, so as Johnb mentions above, I should be seeing this 'page not found' message on both my laptops. I'm not particularly tech-savvie, so the fact I don't see it on my personal laptop probably is just something to do with my browser settings as john mentioned. (And yes, Facebook has been banned in China for at least a few years now unless you have a VPN which I never get round to doing!).

Godfrey_Bigot is right, it's a Facebook Like button. Unfortunately China-based users that aren't using a VPN will probably see (depending on their browser) part of a "page not found" page. We should probably add a filter so that if the user's IP is China-based we just don't show that box -- I'll add it to the list.

Hi Chris,
Bodawei's comment was only an hour ago - does that mean CPod has been working this late?
In the position you describe, I see a Facebook 'Like' button. Is Facebook banned in China?

glad to hear the login issue is being resolved. It has been driving me slowly insane the last few days. Godfrey_Bigot, I think that "web page not available" banner issue that bodawei referred to has been resolved today. It was appearing on each lesson's comments page for the last few days between the intro blurb at the top and the first comment. However, i've been on the site for several hours today and haven't noticed it anymore.

Hi suxiaoya
Sucks that you have to be at work today, and tomorrow as well I guess? Anyway, having got your attention, thought I'd mention the 'This Web Page is Not Available' that appears on every ChinesePod page, eg. across the top of the Comments section on this page. I guess someone else has already reported it, but I haven't yet seen any discussion. The words are cut off at the bottom - you see about 10% - 20% of each word.

yes happening here too!!!
and it appears that when they attempt to fix one thing, they usually break something else (that was working fine) but one thing we can count on is that they are consistant, And this upgrade/new features/dashboard/whatever you want to call it has been going on way too long now, its about time they get it finished and get it right, everyday when we log in its now become a bet to see what the new issue will be or what else is not working today- very annoying :(

It's the same for me... it is every time as well.
Just (one of) this week's bug(s) I guess.

September 26, 2010 at 11:31 AMOh, and thanks, now I know I view the half-visible 'This Web Page is Not Available' as a heavy cross. I'm wondering if you could change the wording to 'You Cannot see Facebook', as a daily reminder of what life is like in the Free World? :)
