brendan - Here is the thread that Dave was referring to. It pretty much says it although others may have additional suggestions. Hotels are not a problem in SH. There are so many very nice ones.

From my experience, if your main activities are going to be in PuXi, avoid staying in PuDong. JinMao (the Grand Hyatt) is very nice but morning and afternoon traffic jams at the tunnel crossings are unbearable.

Dave,
I have stayed at the Renaissance Yangtze on Yan an xi road and the Marriott hong qiao on hong qiao rd. Both are nice 4-5 star places. Hong Qiao has a sports bar but I kind of like the quieter atmosphere at the Renaissance and its a little cheaper. They have a cigar bar and several nice restaurants. Both great places but I think next time Im going to try the Jin Jiang for the experience and local color. Thanks Goulniky. There is always the 5 star gold standard - the grand hyatt. Personally I didnt like the atmosphere.

Ritz Portman on Nanjing Xi Lu? I don't know about wired for internet but it's definately 5 star and in a nice part of town I think. Just down from the JingAn Temple and very close to the subway for easy travel.

However, "Hotel with no westerners" as a rule does mean "unwanted annoying late night phone call".if you are male.

another thing I liked about the 锦江 (JinJiang) 'Bund' hotel is there are few Westerners, and the staff doesn't insist to speaking English to you (most can't anyway)

http://www.greentree.com.cn/ .. i've been there a few times, it has wired internet, the rates are pretty good too...and it looks like a typical hilton from the inside.

We have a couch here at Cpod. You may have to share it with Dave L however. We do have some good coffee and of course internet...

Yeah Frank, I definitely want to check out that restaurant as well. If anyone else finds this useful that would be great. I'm still hoping for some more suggestions!

Dave, I don't know that I'd consider it unrelated. We're lucky to have access to fellow learners and travelers who have been where you want to go. Another user posted a link to a great Shanghai restaurant not long ago. You can bet your bottom RMB I'm going to check it out. :-D

Thanks for the info guys. Basically I'm looking for a 5 star hotel or less with wired internet in the room where they don't charge unnecessarily high fees for 'so called' high speed. I guess high fees are probably relative in this case. The matter of price is mostly on principle. Spas, pools, clubs or whatever in the hotel are nice but not necessary. I'm often a late-night room service food junkie so that would probably be the only other luxury I'd want. Any feedback on people's experiences staying in hotels that meet those criteria would be great. If anyone has a hotel they particularly liked and want to plug then I'm all ears. Thanks, and I apologize to the C-Pod staff for cluttering your board with unrelated material.

October 31, 2007 at 07:53 PMif price is not really an issue, wired internet access clearly won't be one either! How much of a non-issue is it, how much do you want to pay? I stayed almost 2 weeks at the 锦江 (JinJiang) 'Bund' hotel recently, price is 219 RMB / night for a single and all room have free broadband (no wireless though). I had a double which is obviously more roomy which cost about the same as I bought the hotel card. It isn't 'fantastic' but convenient, clean, comfortable, reliable. I booked online with no deposit, paid by credit card. I spend a fair amount of time in much pricier hotels as part of my job, and frankly I don't need what they offer - I guess JJ would be considered 2-stars business hotels. But there's no bar, no bellboy to tip, and if you're looking for a spa, that's clearly not the place for you.
