I forgot to mention, they weren't speaking English. The words they used were 表哥, 表姐, and it seemed like they were being used as general terms.

So you think translation for learning purposes should contain Chinglish, if that's what it takes to stick to the structure? Huh interesting, that never ocurred to me. I don't think I agree with that, because when I read an English translation of Chinese I want to know how the things I know how to say in English are said in Chinese--but will give it a bit more thought. I'm a translator (Japanese-English) btw.

It wouldn't surprise me if that were true Jen. It struck me how, whenever I heard the Japanese kids receiving the visitors from Hangzhou this year ask (friendly, get-to-know-you questions of course. it's not that the Japanese kids were very aware at all of one-child policy in China) the Chinese kids if they had brothers and sisters, the answer was almost always "I have cousins!", even "We have cousins!". It seems natural to me, if the kids are raised to think of their first cousins as almost siblings.

Thanks for your helpful input tingyun. To be honest I haven't actually read all of it yet (but I will!). Would you say "incredible" could work for 令人诧异 in this context, or is that going too far in another direction?

Of course your point re using Chinese-Chinese dictionaries is well taken, this has been discussed before more than once I think. We're looking at English terms here because we're looking at Baba's translation of this podcast, and I wondered how best to express this 诧异.

May just be repeating what you've said Baba, but:

I've said before I have great respect for experience. Like you and I'm sure many others, I'm also very interested in getting lots of different perspectives, the more input the better. More interested in that than hearing just one or two people's accounts, as impressive or solid their 'credentials' (I mean exposure such as years lived in and extent of travel in China, years of formal Chinese study, being employed or running businesses in China, relationships with the people) may apparently be. So 'novices' or first-time travelers there with impressions to share may not answer the great China mysteries or questions about China we have for instance, but I value their input here just as much.

I hope everybody who has something they'd like to share will feel entirely welcome to, because they are!

I'd like to ask about a word that appears in the opening bit of the lesson--诧异. For once I'm a bit hesitant to take nciku's word for the meaning, simply because it differs enough from the explanation in my Chinese-Japanese dictionary. Nciku says 诧异 is "to be surprised, to be astonished" (ah I see now the Example Search also does bring up a "wonder at sth" at least).

The way my dictionary puts it, it seems like being surprised, but a kind of surprise that comes with some suspicions or speculation, a thinking things are strange here, a wondering why whatever causing the surprise should have come about. Not really to be astonished.

Can anyone offer insights on this?

Jenny, mixing up is cool (though personally, I see no reason to change anything about the current Intermediate podcasts; you and John make a perfect bilingual teaching team for that level as far as I'm concerned); I would have liked to find you've decided to do that for Advanced though. Actually what I mean is that I wish you would return sometimes to host an Advanced lesson. I do like the current hosts very much of course, it's just that you are missed there.

I'm sure Dilu and Jason are going to be great new additions as hosts. You made a point of saying how impressed you were with Dilu's amazing personality, and it goes without saying that that does really matter, a lot.
