October 23, 2010 at 12:27 AMHi Baba, I'm quite sure it's 4th tone, 诧异. I think in lower level lessons this 很令人诧异的 would be expressed along the lines of 令人觉得很奇怪的. 差异 wouldn't make sense to me there.

I hope "everywhere in China but Shanghai" didn't come across like ABB--oops forgot you hated these--Anybody But Bush--because that wasn't the sense I meant it in. Just meant the podcasts coming to us from the studios in SH already have SH covered well, your show wouldn't do the same. I've asked for more interview lessons in Advanced. I think you should also do interviews in Chinese.
Don't forget to send a voice sample with your portfolio. You'd have to arrange a way to record yourself and "phone in" your shows of course. Picture would be you on your bike looking a bit dangerous.
ChinesePod has always been coming to us from Shanghai China and they've always been straight up about it. There's no need for them to downplay that or disavow the Shanghai-centric views that might color the lesson content. But I think for the many of us also interested in other parts of China, a Dear Bodawei could be a spicy addition to the menu here. We'd all win.

If you check the User Posts tab in your profile, it's not there. And none of the comments you posted under it show up in the Comments tab either. Did you post it to "General Discussion"? Many of us have had this problem, it's tricky sometimes. Maybe you could try re-posting.

October 21, 2010 at 8:04 AMXiaohu what do your friends say about why they say 心胸狭窄 is a chengyu? Would they say 心情舒畅 / 心情沉重 are also chengyu? If not why not?
I think it's interesting that there is this lack of a common understanding among native speakers as to what is a 成语 and what are maybe 固定搭配 or 熟语 but not 成语. No wonder there are so many lines in movies spoken by Chinese characters: "In China we have a saying ...". Chinese has many sayings. And a rhythm in which a plethora of sets of four characters get used together.
Seems to bear out observations that 成语 is losing ground in spoken Mandarin, and as is CPod's thinking on this, that they're not priority for us to focus on.
I do feel like we Japanese learners are more easily satisfied on this point, because we can zoom in on those 成语 that we're already familiar with in Japanese. Knowing how to say those (sometimes the characters are exactly the same--but of course always pronounced differently--sometimes the Japanese differs a bit) in Chinese is quite gratifying in itself. They're quite a few of those, but not so many that it's overwhelming. Don't know if those are all high-frequency in Chinese though.
