December 25, 2010 at 10:18 PMConnie says in this discussion:
"Giving a clock as gift is taboo in China, because 送钟 sounds like 送终. But it's OK to give a watch as gift."
送终 is to be present at a parent's deathbed, to bury a parent. It's not that timepieces as gifts are a problem, it's the homophonic (sòngzhōng) 送钟 / 送终 that makes giving clocks a taboo. So wristwatches 手表 (shǒubiǎo) are fine. I would think any kind of clock, including electronic alarm clocks--because they would be 钟--are taboo.

December 23, 2010 at 4:29 PMMy apologies Mike, 整容 is of course what John said at 05:32, as a near-same sounding word to 阵容. Sorry about that.

December 23, 2010 at 3:28 PMSorry about that caw2. 咯 is a modal particle, it's affirmative-exclamatory. When someone sticks it on after 当然 for instance, you know they're emphasizing it (and expect you to have no argument). 当然咯!It makes you sound down-to-earth.
FYI there is a QingWen on 咯 & 啦. 咯 is covered in the first two minutes or so.
Hope this awkward explanation helps some.

December 23, 2010 at 9:22 AMThanks for your reply Peter. I do understand that no one is at fault here.
At the same time, my concern is that Connie and Jiaojie have been working so hard particularly these past few weeks to answer our many questions. Their efforts should never be wasted.

December 23, 2010 at 8:45 AMOK I give up trying futilely to post in Tech Problems on Site. The disappeared comment + Connie's very thorough reply was from 4 days ago. They were up here just hours ago, and this thread then ran over into 2 pages of comments. I don't know if any other comments also vanished.
Connie must be dismayed too, to see all her hard work just go poof like that. Hope they can be brought back.
