January 8, 2011 at 10:10 AMYou wouldn't ask your wife even?
This one, and there's at least one other that I can think of. I think it's got something to do with fierce determination on the government's part. But I also think the Chinese who react so forcefully re Taiwan may be primed to do so particularly when speaking with Americans, and Japanese, because they come into contact with so many of us who are (irritatingly, to them) unaware that this sensitive issue even exists, cheerfully referring to Taiwan as a country in their presence.

January 6, 2011 at 10:06 PMHi Trevor, yes 先生(せんせい) sensei. I know nothing about the karate world and customs, but I'm sure this applies there too--you can't use sensei to refer to yourself. The only exception I can think of is if you're speaking with small children and telling them you're a teacher. It's an honorific other people use to refer to or address you (we also address all kinds of doctors, and lawyers and certain other professionals by it). My J-C dictionary tells me 先生 in Chinese formerly used to be the word for "teacher", which has since been replaced by 老师 lǎoshī. You can use laoshi to refer to yourself unlike sensei. You can say 我是小学老师。wǒ shì xiǎoxué lǎoshī I'm an elementary school teacher.
Aiyo, now you have to go break it to puffed-up 先生 (xiānsheng) that he's using Sensei wrong, and watch him deflate. Actually there ought to be an appropriate title he could use for such certificates, I'm just not sure what it would be, knowing nothing about karate.

January 5, 2011 at 8:58 AM有可能是他尴尬不愿意在大众面前谈私事哦。如果他也很害羞,那你这样永远不会收到回信吧。
嗯,反正只好听其自然。今后我少管闲事!

January 5, 2011 at 5:36 AMI asked a guide who was showing us around Suzhou where Wang Leehom is from (this is how little I knew about anything Chinese in those days), because we were seeing his face all over the place, on magazine covers and in ads and Wahaha mineral water labels etc etc. Her eyes flashed and she said, forcefully (yes, forcefully indeed.) through her teeth, "China". We were like (ignorant), well yeah of course we know he's Chinese, so where in China? She fairly growled at us, "Taiwan". So then we understood (and only later did we get it that he was actually raised in the US, which is really more to the point). This was an otherwise pallid, unenthusiastic kind of girl, this guide, not a people person and not too fond of talking. I do hope she's since found a different career.
