Could anyone tell me what that word for "tip" that Jenny uses is? Tip has so many synonyms and my dictionary doesn't seem to include that one.

Thanks very much, and belatedly, for solving that IME issue, I didn't see the replies until now. I think I must have had my notification options badly configured. Your help came just in time anyway because we had nüè dài 虐待 in a more recent Qing Wen and I was stuck on that too!

Graeme73, I know exactly what you mean, I don't live in China either and when I watch a film I also feel it is a great achievement when I catch the odd word or phrase. But I am convinced that amongst all the stuff I miss there are a lot of words that in fact I already know. Just knowing a word is no guarantee that you you will actually recognise it when you hear it, but you definitely won't otherwise, so it is all a process of planting seeds like you say.

I thought this was a very useful and interesting lesson as usual. However, the reason I am posting is that now I am writing up the vocabulary I have come across a funny quirk with the Windows Input Method Editor. I try to type the character 略 lüè, but I find that after I type in lv (which is the normal way of telling the IME one wants to type lü), when I hit the "e" key the IME gives me 旅 and then wants to start a new word. It is as though this word was not in its internal database.

Are there any other Windows users who have come across this problem or know of a workaround?

I just saw that the "hai" in lihai means evil, so maybe an easy translation to remember would be "wicked!"
