January 2, 2008 at 9:37 AMI have a question about the expression, "臭骂一顿", there is another expression which is the same characters reversed, "一顿臭骂". Don't the two expressions carry the same meaning? Don't they both mean something like, "give someone a piece of your mind?"

The confusion is coming from what my first Mandarin teacher taught me, that with multiple 3rd tones in succesion all except the last 3rd tone should change to 2nd tone. In other words if you have 4 3rd tones in a row it should be pronounced" 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd. In theory isn't that how it should be? He told me that the people who alternate 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 3rd are essentially incorrect, (but he would always say), "Even though we are Chinese, sometimes we say things wrong so you can always take heart that you are MORE CORRECT than we Chinese". I guess at the end of the day it doesn't matter that much since either way I can be understood, but still it would be nice to know the most correct way.
