Posted on: Beyond Or: Another Use of 还是 (háishi)
April 28, 2010 at 10:36 PMFeeling a bit lost with this qing wen. I don't think they ever really explain it, or if Amber tried, Ken just said "well, I think it's still "or" ".
I'm feeling pretty dumb! (as usual!) So 还是 is used in this sense as a mollifier to settle a disagreement? Like a "why not..." "well, let's.." ?
Hralp, someone?

April 28, 2010 at 7:19 PMNo, it's a term applied to quite a few professions, e.g. kung fu teachers are called 师傅, or 师父 (same pronunciation). There's even a wikipedia article about it!

April 28, 2010 at 2:26 PMHere you go, an update on the HIV issue. It was not a local policy, it was a government policy, and it's now been ended:

April 28, 2010 at 10:13 AMArgh. I'm guilty of this. It just means we need to pay more attention to where we are posting messages. Apologies from me, in any case (although I'm not anyone important!)
