It supposedly represents a bowed snake with two heads, looking like a rainbow - hence the 虫 radical in the modern character. The 工 is obviously a phonetic element.

March 25, 2011 at 10:13 AMHi Baba, I suspect this is "writers' license". The traffic jams that last days, are not generally in the city itself, but on the highways.
The writer is probably referring to this traffic jam in particular, which mostly involved coal trucks. The drivers slept in their vehicles, but I love your idea of going home at night and returning to the car each day to sit in the traffic:)

In the north, this dish is usually called 拍黄瓜。The 拍 refers to bashing the 黄瓜 with the flat side of the 菜刀 before you 切成小块。This helps it absorb the flavours of the sauce.

April 13, 2011 at 4:52 PMSocial work is a relatively new phenomenon in China - it was only officially recognised by the government as a profession (whatever that means?) in 2004, but it is growing. Many universities now offer degrees in social work (社会工作) - it was first (re)introduced to universities in the 1980s - and there's an academic journal of social work published here. Premier Wen Jiabao recently announced a target of training 2 million new social workers by 2015 and 3 million by 2020, though of course most of these won't be graduates. Even for graduates working in large cities such as Shanghai, salaries are very low (hence Bodawei's friend selling mobile phones on the side)
Just last month, I came across a transcript (in English) of an interview with professor Xu Yongxiang, a social work academic, about the state of social work in China. Here's the link if you're interested:
