I've seen Mike transliterated as both 麦克 and 迈克 so these things aren't totally set in stone. Having said that, foreign names do pretty much have standard characters assigned to their transliterations according to a publication called the 《世界人名翻译大辞典》(for the mainland - Taiwan and Hong Kong often use different transliterations) which I believe is compiled by the 新华 news agency (who of course have to deal with a lot of foreign names in their line of work).
I guess the characters are chosen not to have any negative or just plain silly connotations and so certain characters are preferred over others in transliterated names. The starting point these days would be this table (from the above publication), though I imagine the transliterations of a lot of common "western" names date back to early translations of the bible into Chinese.
If you read news in Chinese, you will pretty quickly learn to recognise which characters are most commonly used in transliterations of foreign names - and it can be good fun trying to work out who the name belongs to :)

June 20, 2012 at 3:06 PM...And there are now also loads of schools within China that allow students to study for and take US, UK, Australian etc high school exams. Many of the students who attend these schools have already taken the gaokao, but there are also a large number who do it as an alternative to the gaokao.

I'm guessing the meaning is something like "It might be faster, but not so much faster". Is that right?
Can anyone give some more examples of this pattern "...也...不到哪里去"?
