March 24, 2011 at 1:19 AMInteresting how Western concepts such as childhood are permeating China. The idea expressed in this lesson, about how children should be able to enjoy their childhood is a relatively recent phenomenon (last 100 years) in the US. It is interesting there is no economic based discussion - in an agrarian society, children are best suited to help on the farm. One only needs to examine the childhood of Sir Isaac Newton to realize what can potentially be a human capital waste on a farm.
BTW, the photo are of kids playing on the beach. Doesn't CPod have some pics of kids working in the brick factories in Shanxi?

March 8, 2011 at 5:00 AMHa, ha, Vitamin B12 deficiency, a prevalent disorder among Chinese men. Double dose of X chromosome protective of glossic forms of phenotypic expression.
Seriously though, women in general have easier to understand voices. Use Audacity, you can change the vocal characteristics if it really bothers you. I use it to edit out poor Chinese pronunciation; it kills me to hear the wrong tone. (Now why that allowed?)

February 28, 2011 at 4:40 AMThis reminds me of a time I was bargaining in Beijing's Silk Market. We were negotiating for a long time and the sales woman at the end was upset with pace of negotiation. She finally said to me, "吃饱了还想撑"

February 27, 2011 at 5:36 PMThis is really a cultural difference. I personally find this 恭维 annoying (Maybe I am too Americanized) but it takes some reality adjustment to realize my Chinese counterpart is not being insincere or disingenuous.

March 25, 2011 at 3:58 AMFor anyone who seriously wants to know more about child labor problems, especially the Shanxi brickyards I mentioned above, there is a link from 2007; it is written in English:
