February 1, 2008 at 3:28 AMI have a question...like 6 months later... Here, we learned that 以为 (yǐwéi) means "I thought (erroneously)..." How would you say the opposite, i.e. "I knew this would happen"?

January 30, 2008 at 4:42 AMI thought I'd mention that I really like it when you guys include words that look similar (but might have unrelated meanings) in the same lesson. This really helps me to distinguish minor differences between characters, such as 酒 and 洒. Had they appeared in two different lessons, I would have undoubtedly mistaken 洒 for 酒 (since I learned 酒 first). I also really like how certain words/characters will appear in multiple lessons, across difficulty levels. For example, 挑 wouldn't be very easy for me to remember. But since it's been in a few recent lessons now (as 挑, 挑剔, and 挑染), I'll probably never forget it. I'm sure this is just an example of the "examples, examples, examples" that Ken is always talking about, but it's effectiveness is worth emphasizing. I would really like to see more of this approach with the grammatical structures, as they are often very nuanced and difficult to grasp without a couple thousand examples. At least, that's how many it would take for me to understand 了. Hopefully the legend of Grammar Guide will prove to be substantiated within the next decade or so. :-)

January 18, 2008 at 8:39 PMSomebody mentioned in the show (I don't remember who) that their Chinese friends always called them by their full Chinese name, and never by their given name only. Is this pretty much the norm? Do the Chinese ever know each other "on a first name basis"?

January 18, 2008 at 8:31 PMThere are several native Chinese where I work, and only a few of them have chosen English names. Couple that with the frequent overhead pages, and you have a recipe for disaster.
