Posted on: The Many Ways to Play
January 14, 2013 at 7:01 AMHi Keth. I do believe you should say it this way, as you can't say "joke ON ME" as that is is not understood in China. And the verb to play a joke is 开:
开((一)个)玩笑 Kāi yí gè wán xiào
kāi = to play (to open up and do)
yì gè = a (optional)
wánxiào = joke
When you just say 开玩笑 kāiwánxiào that means to joke, like to tell a joke. As I write this though, I'm not how you would distinguish between playing a joke on someone and telling a joke or to be joking, as I often will say 我开玩笑 wǒkāiwánxiào "I'm joking"...the only difference I can see is context. Here are some examples:
不要再跟那位老人开玩笑了。这太不礼貌了。
bú yào zài gēn nà wèi lǎorén kāiwánxiào le. Zhe tài bù lǐmào le.
Don't play a joke on that old man any more. It's impolite.
你曾经对别人开过玩笑吗?。
nǐ céngjīng duì bié rén kāi guò wánxiào ma?
Did you ever play a joke on someone else?
一天他们决定跟这位教授开个玩笑。
yì tiān tāmen juědìng gēn zhè wèi jiàoshòu kāi ge wánxiào
One day they decided to play a joke on their professor.
他极爱开玩笑。
tā jíài kāi wánxiào.
He is awfully fond of joking.

January 14, 2013 at 5:18 AMshawnprince, I think the dialog might go like this:
"la fa!" 拉阀
"la na fa?" 拉哪阀?
"la na fa la!" 拉那阀啦!
"fa la le la!" 阀拉了啦!
And some how that would progress into "fa la la la la la la la la" (deck the halls... :P)

January 14, 2013 at 5:07 AMWe just put this update out to be able to share, so no, don't think anyone has done it yet. I could do an example, but then it wouldn't be real homework, so nothing really to see. Basically a student uploads their work in a doc, mp3, or other file that the teacher can view, and that appears on their own Task page. They can then "Share" it on ChinesePod [the given lesson's discussion page], Facebook, Twitter, or via Email. Basically all that does it posts a link (or sends a link) to the uploaded file. There is a page for just ChinesePod teachers to review homework, so they can see it there, but it is not public. If a teacher reviews it, the student needs to go to the Task page of the lesson they did the task for and the feedback will be displayed there...no fancy way of knowing which Tasks have feedback as of yet. Yet if you share your work on ChinesePod, you can also let people view/listen to it and get feedback. Hope that clarifies some things, rather than confuses....

January 14, 2013 at 3:42 AMBut yes, as you maybe caught in my last message, people have been doing the homework tasks, and teachers have been giving feedback. Another things to note at the moment, as those who have done it have found, once a teacher has given feedback you can't change anything or leave a comment to the teacher. Currently if you do want to say something in response, you will need to send them a private message from their profile. Or, as I've been saying on here, you can share your homework in the discussion page and ask the teacher any other questions you may have there.

January 14, 2013 at 3:32 AMbababardwan, I'm not sure actually if there is a post or blog that explains this, but I will encourage it to be done.
To see other people's work, there is no one page to go to to view your own tasks or others (yet I have recommended that to be a feature soon). A user who wants to have their homework shown can click the "Share" button on the Task page and it will allow them to post to the Discussion page of the given lesson. It is up to them to "Share" here, or on other Social Media. One would do this if they are looking for feedback from the community or just thinks what they did was pretty great. :) It also lets you have another teacher outside of ChinesePod view your homework by letting you send the link to the file. However, it doesn't send your comment on the Task page nor the Task instructions, so be sure to include those in other "Share" methods other than sharing on the discussion page if you want others to know what your task response even was accomplishing. :)
Hope that helps some. I have to admit I'm still just observing how people will use it. I'm glad some people have been posting their tasks. Let's see if anyone will share on the discussion pages and if it makes sense to those who view their post.

January 14, 2013 at 2:25 AMRegarding Tasks/Homework: You can now Share your work here on ChinesePod (will put a comment in the discussion form with a link to your file, but not your comment you left for the teacher, so others can review your work...[no cheating now...do your own! haha]), Facebook, Twitter or send and email. Please try it out! :)

January 11, 2013 at 7:14 AMYeah...I don't understand "Diverter valve" either.... so since I'm not a plumber, I don't need the Chinese nor the English, haha. Thanks Vera. Do you use "阀" fá for "valve" much though, if you were telling someone how to use your shower?
