August 22, 2013 at 2:58 AMI know we're not here to learn English from the translations, but funny to see the word "videotaped" in the line "I've videotaped the whole thing." Do we even say that word any more with phone videos? Haha. I would just say "I made a video of the whole thing." or "I got the whole thing on video." In Chinese, "videotape" the verb is, according to 有道: 将…录到录像带上

August 22, 2013 at 1:44 AMReally liked in this lesson how John right away was pointing out common mistakes or issues we face in first learning Chinese. For example, I still find it odd that if I were to ever need help on the street to say 救命! not 帮助!Also learners do have to have their ears ready to hear measure words量词 that could be used otherwise to make a different noun if not a measure word. When I heard 喝口水 I didn't think "drink spit", so it took me a second to get what John was getting at. :)

August 22, 2013 at 1:36 AMLike many differences in Chinese, things are not always direct in wording, especially in this case where 胸罩 or 乳罩 may be embarrassing for a Chinese to say, but even is just a custom. The funniest thing that happened in my first trips to China before coming to live here was when I was with my parents and we went to someone's house and had coats on, and the man who owned the house said to my mom, in English, "Please take your clothes off." This was because in Chinese, you don't have to say "coat" and he had it in his mind to just use 衣服, not 外套/大衣... you just say 脱衣服. It is the context (the situation and not just words) that make the usage clear...that you are just wanting them to strip their outer layer.

August 16, 2013 at 2:16 AMSeeing this lesson reminded me I had a bunch of voice messages on my WeChat I never listened to. Had one friend telling me to not send messages when there is a lot of background noise, which I did last Sunday after church. Oops! Still getting used to sending 60-second voice messages for free.

Posted on: Goodbye to Shanell
August 7, 2014 at 4:35 PMGreat you found this video!
While I saw Shanell come a few to ChinesePod to do some part-time work, I actually got to know her totally apart from ChinesePod, having met at a Board Game cafe before I even worked at ChinesePod. When I found out she not only knew about ChinesePod, but made a video, I rushed to go watch it.
Good to see the video again. After I left at the end of November last year, and then John shortly after in December, I didn't really get a chance to work with Shanell. Would have been nice to work with her, yet my time, like hers now, was done in Shanghai. Very touching to hear this News & Features.
