1) 几个人？
2) 几位？(polite)
3) 几口人？
Would you ever say the third one for anything else besides for asking how many people there are in your family?
Also, my Korean friend once told me that the word they use for "birthday" is "saeng-il" and that it's a Chinese loan word (shengri). Anyway, she told me that there is another word they use which I think was "saeng-shin" and that one is used for a birthday of someone who you'd want to show respect to -- kinda like how you say "ji3 wei4?" instead of "ji3ge ren2?". Now, is there another word for "birthday" in Chinese that's like the Korean "saeng-shin"?

June 4, 2012 at 6:22 AMHere in the US, if you're in New York City, you can easily find a taxi in the streets. However, I'm in Orange County (California) and you hardly see taxis here and you have to call them in advance if you want one to pick you up and drop you off somewhere.
So which is more common in China -- can one easily find taxis in the streets and all you have to do is wave at the taxi and it stops for you or do you usually have to call them?

June 4, 2012 at 6:14 AMIn China today, are fruits still sold in "catties (斤)" not just in traditional market places but in stores, too? Are they ever sold in kilos (kilograms)? How do you say "kilo" in Chinese? (Please give me a commonly-used term.)
Also, could you help me correct my sentence?
(a fruit vendor says) 这边是甜的，那边是酸的。*Question: Now, if he wanted to ask, "which (sweet vs. sour) would you like?", would he say 哪个，哪种 or something else?
