April 26, 2008 at 11:30 PMDear Changye, Henning, Strictly speaking, 到位 and 过关 are NOT interchangeable. There is a subtlety differences in it. It may looks the same at a superficial level, but it carries a different feeling. Therefore it has to be use very carefully when you speak to a native speaker. Example: 你的英语过关了。 This sentence means that you just passed your English. 你的英语到位了。 This sentence means that your English is at the right level. Meaning that you are just at that appropriate level. We can see the nuances from these 2 sentences, in the first sentence, a person may passed his English, but may not have achieved an appropriate level. ( May be the exam or test is too easy) In the second sentence, it gives the reader the feeling that he/she has an appropriate English level, regardless or whether he/she failed or passed the exam. 过关, is usually used in an exam, a competition or a challenge. 到位, is usually used to describe a person's position in relation to the context.

April 26, 2008 at 5:14 AMThe difference between 男人 and 男子 in Chinese is just like the difference between "male" and "man" in English. Both words are interchangeable. There isn't an age boundary for the word 男子, you can use it on a 100 year-old man if you like.

April 26, 2008 at 3:48 AMguolanusa， 你说到重点了，这是当代中国最可悲的一件事，不少中国人还停留在中华中心的落伍思想。和大部分中国以外的华裔有着思想上的冲突。 更可悲的事情就是在中国，不少人看不起本身的民族，中国人相互看不起对方，这些人把白人或日本人当主子来伺候，贬低了本身的民族与文化。悲哀。。。 人人生而平等的观念何时才能牢牢的巩固在中国人的思维里呢？

April 26, 2008 at 3:33 AM男中国人, grammatically not wrong, but it is not used in such a way, the most common way of saying Chinese man is 中国男人. 男子汉 means a macho man. The opposite of 男 is 女. 女人，女子，中国女人。 But the opposite of 男子汉 is 淑女.

April 26, 2008 at 3:25 AM有时觉得很奇怪，药就是药，我个人非常反对分中西药两词。 就好比医学，分所谓的中西医，非常不恰当，该分法还停留在一百年前的中华思想。用现代医学来称呼西医才是最恰当的称呼，当代医学知识以科学论证为基础，并不以国家或文化背景为基础，中国人和其他亚洲人在现代医学的贡献并不在欧美国家之下。称现代医学为西医，贬低了欧美国家以外的贡献。 另一方面，在西方语言中，也并没有以“西医”之类的用词来称呼现代医学。

April 26, 2008 at 3:10 AM這堂課的標題用得不恰當，既然主要內容在說美籍華人，就不該使用華僑一詞。華裔或華人更恰當。 中國大陸和台灣以外，華人人口最多的國家是馬來西亞，馬來西亞也是中國大陸和台灣以外中文使用得最多國家。中文播客是否介紹一下呢。

April 26, 2008 at 11:56 PMHenning, 谢谢你。will be fine, 谢谢你的帮助 is weird though not wrong. 撒娇 does carries a little negative connotations most of the time. In respond to the action of the two hosts in the very beginning of the conversation, they are more like 撒赖 than 撒娇.
