You may only be able to get sliced turkey, prosciutto, etc. in big cities like Shanghai. But the kind of SPAM-like meat called 午餐肉 is widely available. Secret ingredient: "parts."
Here's a recent article from the New York Times about this ever-popular "food."

(Elvis A. Presley, the King of Rock'n'Roll) 的欢迎。

Huh? You put 芥末酱 on things besides sandwiches?
Marco Polo is a chain of bakeries. I figured they were nation-wide but I've actually never seen them outside of Shanghai. Just another reason to come visit the Pearl of the Orient!

Your ideal sandwich left out my favorite ingredient-- 芥末酱 jie4mo5jiang4 mustard!
I've found that Marco Polo's Walnut bread (10 kuai) is pretty good-- hearty and not sweet. But you have to hack off your own pieces as it's not sliced.

The two mao price is standard for a smallish bag. The bigger bag is 3 mao. Since the stores print their own bags (it's a kind of 户外广告hu4wai4guang3gao4-- outdoor advertising ) the government is not going to get that money.
Hi tvan
I've never seen leather bags here. But some older folks will carry a heavy tote bag when they go grocery shopping.

Be careful with that baijiu! People swear up and down that only the cheap stuff tastes like fragrant gasoline.
But I've tried some very pricey stuff and the feeling was the same. If you're toasting people at a dinner, learn how to skillfully splash most of it out of your glass before drinking ;-)
