Hi Zhen,

汤热着呢 sentence is from the grammar book. 烫 is 'very hot' i.e. scalding, so definitely hotter than 热 . However, I do see that 热 is more commonly related to weather (天气很热),health (吃药就退热)personality (他很热诚)so I would tend to agree that a more appropriate adjective for 'hot' soup is 烫 rather 热. However, whether the adjective 烫 or 热 is used for the sentence, the structure is the same for using 着 following an adjective rather than a verb.

Structure: noun (or noun phrase) + adjective (or adjectival phrase)+ 着呢

"别碰这个(东西)!(东西)+贵+着呢!"

(她的脸)+红+着呢

汤+热+着呢, or

汤+烫+着呢

{珠穆朗玛峰)+高+着呢

(西湖的景致)+(好看)+着呢

I think adjectival verb simply means an adjective which is functioning in place of a verb. 着呢 is usually attached to a verb to convey the "ing" duration meaning. However, it can also be a suffix to an adjective to also convey 'duration' e.g. (西湖的景致)+(好看)+着呢 Westlake's scenary is beautiful (and continues to be so).

That's my understanding anyway. We may be jumping the gun, however it's been interesting for me. If there are corrections, I'm sure we'll hear from the teachers.

Cheers!
