你好啊!我有一个问题。。。(wo3 you3 yi1ge wen2ti2. I have a question...)

“你在学习英文吗?” 为什么说 “在“?("ni3 zai4 xue2xi2 ying1wen2 ma?" Why say "zai4"?)

Is it asking "Are you studing English right now (现在 xian4zai4)" as opposed to a more general inquiry?

Thanks!

I have a window cleaning business. How would I say what I do? It isn't exactly the same as 擦 玻璃 cā bōli, wipe glass. How about 洗 窗户 xi3 chuang1hu...

rj,

I think my love of reading is part of what inspired me to learn another language... If a lovely turn of phrase in english is so delightful, then surely there is more joy to be had in the other 3000-8000 languages there are. Unfortunately, I am not clever enough to learn them all. ;-)

Melville's excruciatingly detailed account of how a whale is harvested for it's many delights was certainly a testimony of what was involved in energy production in his day. Perhaps that is why Moby Dick was not immediately popular. It is much nicer to turn on the lights without the nasty details of how it came about.

我觉得非好的书是很好的理由推辞邀请。 可是推辞咖啡?她 just not in that to him.

The Wreck of the Whaleship Essex chronicles the loss of the ship that inspired the story Moby Dick. After the shipwreck there were three groups of survivors. One of the groups resorted to cannibalism to survive. When finally rescued 90 days later, this group was in the worst shape mentally (understandable) but also physically. Which just goes to show: Never make a decision on an empty stomach!

Again, agreed, glad I have not been in that position. I hope my flippancy is not taken as disrespect. Also, in my house the starving children were in Armenia. Which was only a reprimand for serving oneself too much. If we didn't eat what someone else served, well we no longer were responsible for the waste.

I think the age of the computer my father had when I was a child could be inquired about this way: 爸爸, 你的 电脑 有 多少 年的 历史? I remember thinking at the time it was ancient... surely by now it is an honorable antique.  Actually, this one looks newer.
