I remember diagraming sentances in elementary school and seemingly endless excersize sheets studying grammar. I found it interesting up to a point. I think it was over taught. The kids who struggled with the lessons were still able to speak well enough and the repeated lessons were just frustrating, not helpful. When I was in middle school we had two class periods in a row, one language (grammar) the other reading. I was put in the "gifted" (whatever) class for reading, but we stayed in the regular class for language. This was a bad idea because the language teacher didn't know what we were reading. So I was reading Hemmingway's Old Man and the Sea, and getting in trouble in language class for run-on sentances. The entire book Old Man and the Sea was one long sentance!!! Well, that may be an exageration but it is true that the first period was on the second page of the book. The lesson I learned was that first you learn the rules. Then you become a master and break them with skill. (Still not a fan of Hemmingway.)

September 2, 2009 at 6:24 PMdunderklumpen, my inexpert opinion is that 学 is learn, so the sentance is "Can you teach me to learn to swim?" Not something we would say in English but it does make sense in its own way. Or if you translate word for word: "you can teach me learn swim?" To me that makes sense because you are teaching, I am learning. The topic of study between us is swimming. I wonder what other sentances can use this construction. Does anyone have an example?

利害的 observation! I had not thought of that! And really awful and awesome mean the same thing...
awe means "a mixed feeling of reverence, fear, and wonder... [obs] fear, dread."
-ful means "characterized by" and -some means "like, tending to be".
So in English we use practically synonymous words to convey feelings of opposite quality, but equal quantity.
利 (not sure this is correct li) means "to do good", 害 means "to do harm"... opposite quality, equal quantity!

August 27, 2009 at 5:28 AM"er" lesson would be great... also I always forget about the missing "e" in -un, and end up saying oon instead of uen. And for wen I say wuhn instead of uen That is the only missing letter I could find by studying the pinyin chart. Are there any others? I would like to correct this error in my pronunciation.
