I found a couple interesting (to me at least)things going thru the vocab on this:

漂流 piao1liu2 、漂亮 piao4liang

漂 first tone has "float, drift" as the definition, piao4 is only used in 漂亮 and doesn't have a defintion listed... 亮 means "bright, clear". So does 漂亮 mean graceful, therefore pretty?

大便、方便

便 means "convenient, simple, excretion"

Maybe this is a case of different cultures thinking the same way.... "Convience" is a euphamism for a public toilet in English. Not one commonly used in my neck of the woods and maybe there is no real connection, but a great way to remember the words!

Anyone have any insights into the etymology of these words?

I had never heard of a coffee extractor before... It looks intruiging. A friend of mine just puts ground coffee in a pitcher of water and keeps it in the fridge over night. Then he filters it and drinks it cold or heats it up. I tried it and it is very good. I always forget to do it but is so simple! And a lot cheaper than the $200 extractor I found online.

I found this article on coffee excreted by civet cats, which are not actually cats... sydcarten, it looks like they may be the monkeys you heard about, though they are not monkeys either. I would try it. It is coffee, thus it is good.

Please feel free to correct my abysmal chinese.

According to Wikipedia Bruce Lee is 李... (I did not know that when I chose it for the dialogue above...) tal_ elucidates below ;-)

I think it depends how you say 不. I also think brevity is not seen as terse in Chinese. 嗯 ng is a perfectly polite way to say "yes". Perhaps not in formal situations, but Connie says it all the time in the podcasts. It sounds quite friendly.

three,

younger guy: 你是李先生吗?ni3 shi4 li3 xian1sheng ma? Are you Mr. Li?

older man: 不是,我不是李先生。bu2shi4, wo3 bu2shi4 li3 xian1sheng. No, I am not Mr. Li.

or the older man could just say 不 bu4 if he is not feeling so talkative!

happy studies!

ok, so here is my attemp at "live long and prosper"

祝您活到老和繁荣

shorter and less formal: 长活兴旺

and of course we all know "live long and prosper" is the response to "peace and long life"

平静长活 or 祝您平安和活到老

any other ideas about how to say this?

I like the chengyuness of the 4 character versions, but don't know if it is clear that it is a blessing...

ryanchild, 好知道了! Seems the mainland translation is more accurate, as 进取号 is not a warship.

xiaophil, 邀请你跟我们有“全星系的漱口爆炸酒.”
